Nonreciprocal media

I define nonreciprocal media as content that is ā€˜one-wayā€™ or ā€˜absorption onlyā€™. This means that the learner is only absorbing the material and not interacting with it or making it their own. This is the most standard style of learning and what those who do a lot of online courses are probably most used to.

Videos, readings, articles, podcasts and infographics consist of nonreciprocal media.

Experimental Media

Experiential media allows the user to control their own learning at their own pace, as opposed to just absorbing media. Unlike a video that just plays or a text piece that you have to read through, experiential media allows you to experiment and play with the content to better understand it.

Image comparison plugins, scrollies, 360-degree videos, timelines and interactive charts/infographics consist of experimental media.

Simulations

Simulations allow users to mess around and experiment with different variables. Kind of like a game without the gamification.

An important use for simulations is to allow people to learn how to manage equipment without actually having access to it. This can be for varied specific industry needs, like flight simulators, tractor simulators, and, in the below example, lab simulations.

Anatomical Media

I call these groups ā€˜anatomicalā€™ not because they are about biological anatomy, but because they are good at labelling parts of things. If there is one issue that I have with anatomical content type is that it is very easy for the learner to miss clicking on a hotspot.

Images with interactive hotspots, 3D models with search functions, virtual tours are some examples of anatomical media.

Assessment media

Modern education systems need assessments to allow the educator (and the student ā€” and the parent) to know how much the learner understands the subject.

Assessments, quizzes, tests, and exams are all made up of questions, but there are many ways to ask these questions, and that is what we will be exploring in this section.

Examples include question papers, surveys and multiple-choice questions.
