About an hour before fajr, my light, and my neighbor’s light would turn back on. I could see her window across the little garden that separated our buildings. And I would look at the other darkened windows, closed eyes, and grow sad for the Muslim ummah. I often thought on these nights of the saying of Kaʿb al-Aḥbār who said, “The angels look down from heaven upon those who pray tahajjud as you look at the stars of the sky,” and thought how very dark the earth must look to the angels.

WHAT IS QIYAM-AL-LAYL AND TAHAJJUD?
- The prayer at night is termed in Arabic either qiyām al-layl (standing at night) OR
- if occurring after any amount of sleep, tahajjud, and is the most important prayer after the farḍ (obligatory) prayers.
- The prayer consists of any number of rakʿahs that can be long or short in their recitation and movements.
- They can be done in a group or alone.
- The words tahajjud and qiyām are often used interchangeably, but tahajjud specifically refers to a prayer that is prayed after rising from sleep and qiyām al-layl means to stand at night regardless of whether one has slept or not yet.

Because Tahajjud is UNIQUE!
Nafl/Nafila: All prayers other than obligatory prayers is called Nafl.
Remember: Nafila Brings us to the love of Allah (God).
And this Ultimately is what we ALL need.
Allah describes Nafila as Tahajjud.
Remember: Night Time is for sleep AND Worship of Allah SWT.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala said:
وَمِنَ الَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهٖ نَا فِلَةً لَّكَ ۖ عَسٰۤى اَنْ يَّبْعَـثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَا مًا مَّحْمُوْدًا
"And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station."
(QS. AL-ISRAA 17: VERSE 79)

Remember: We are Created to be 'IbadAllah (The Worshippers of Allah SWT.)
The real rest is standing before Allah at night! In the last one third of the night. Not in slumber!
Sujood (prostration to God) is an action of the heart!
Tahajjud is the place where our heart wakes up!
Tahajjud is the most important Nafila!
Tahajjud helps us to GROW individually and as a community.
Tahajjud elevates not only our personal status but also the status of our community!
This was the promise of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him)
