As one of the many people you know who is immunosuppressed, avoiding disease is something we spend a lifetime mastering.
You probably think you don't know any such person. We look exactly like anyone else, no sunken eyes, deathly pallor, skeletal sickliness. We quietly face this daily struggle silently.
But we are here
The SARS virus is one of the 5 most contagious diseases know to man. Yet despite being directly exposed to it twice during hospital stays, I am somehow, still here.
We never before asked for help. But for the first time in 50 years, I ask one thing of my fellow man.
A thought.

Don't imagine people who are immunosuppressed, for whatever reason, take no measures to protect themselves, instead expecting you to do everything.
We are first in the queue when vaccines become available. Still wearing masks, using hand sanitizer and standing a few feet apart, despite much of that being for your benefit.
But we now face the triple whammy. The coronavirus, seasonal flu and Avian flu. A combination the strongest among us would struggle to fight off.
Remember, we are the same people in your life who love you and you claimed to love too. None of that has changed.
Please remember us.

Botched attempts at maintaining an effective lockdown, imposing restrictions on one area, whilst people simply moved to another, less restrained locality, have led to the inhumainity of depending on herd immunity.
For this to work, about 80% of the population needs to be immune, by way of vaccines or gaining natural immunity from the disease itself. Then, of course, there will be a degree of "collateral damage" (that's us).
Before these vaccines were available, I had accepted my death was inevitable, said my goodbyes and got my affairs in order.
There is a real, human cost to every life lost.

In this age of throwaway culture, is it too much to ask of my fellow man, that he spare a thought for those who have done nothing to endanger themselves; that they may get a chance to live?
Does it not seem a little harsh telling us our lives are meaningless and we are of lesser value due to a genetic, lifelong condition?
You may not have seen much of us lately, as many have been advised to self isolate.
We don't expect you to go out of your way to protect us. All we ask is to remember, we are REAL people. People you created memories with. People who were always there for you.
Don't throw us away.

An unpleasant, yet undeniable reality, is the twisted way this disease can turn you into a killer.
During the incubation period, or as an asymptomatic patient, more than possibly, it's the probability, that we may infected the people around us who we love and care for most.
If someone with a depleted immune system is infected, pneumonia will quickly jump on board with all the other deadly conditions that will lead to their lonely demise, gasping for air. A terrible thought for them and you.
I only mention it because the guy who accidentally killed my aunt, hanged himself rather than live with it.
