Skimming or scanning is a technique which involves just going through the text and becoming familiar with the text. Doing this won't slow you down when you are confused or surprised but the text. Works best on non-fiction and novels.

If a voice in your head is pronouncing this right now, you are subvocalizing!If you stop subvocalizing whatever you read, you will dramatically increase your reading speed. While practicing you may loose comprehension but you will get over it once practiced enough

Stop subvocalizing 

Reading every single word can slow you down. Try to read phrases or chunks of words and as you practice, your brain will automatically start making sense even if you don't read every single word. This will also decrease subvocalizing .Be sure to utilize your peripheral vision.

There are times when text seems confusing and you have to re-read.
