The Pioppi Diet

The Pioppi Diet

The diet was created by Dr. Aseem Malhotra, a cardiologist, and Donal O'Neill, who was an international athelete. They both advocate for the low-carb, high-fat diet plan.

This diet encourages eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, nuts, legumes, and fish. It also includes lifestyle changes such as getting adequate sleep, regular socialization, and a weekly-24 hour fast.

The diet discourages red meat, starchy carbs (bread and pasta), and sweet treats.

Evidences On The Pioppi Diet

The Pioppi Diet claims to:

  • Help lose excess body fat
  • Prevent and treat heart disease
  • Manage or even reverse impaired blood glucose conditions
  • Reduce the risk of developing type-2 diabetes, high medication loads, and the development of dementia and cancer

Although various references have been cited by the creators of this diet, there is no specific research or evidence to support this version of the Pioppi diet.

The Safeness of the Pioppi Diet

The Safeness of the Pioppi Diet

The Pioppi diet, when compared to the UK government guidelines, it shares a similarity to it. They both recommend eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, keeping the consumption of red meat to an average of 500g per week, and encourages a healthy lifestyle overall. However, the recommendations for total fat goes against NHS reference intakes.

The Pioppi diet should not be done by the elderly, those under 18 years of age, those undergoing medication, have low BMIs, those who have emotional or psychological issues with food, and especially by those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or diabetic.

The Pioppi Diet: Its Sustainability as a Diet

The Pioppi Diet does allow one to consume less food and calories. When we consume less calories the we will eventually lose weight, most especially when one decides to start incorporating an active lifestyle alongside the diet.

However, this is still dependent on your starting weight and existing diet and lifestyle.

Regarding its sustainability, it is debatable. For the Pioppi Diet to be done for more than 21-days is hard to maintain since it omits a whole food group.
