You are happy for others</h1>If there is anything a management job can teach you, it is being humble and happy for others. Managers of successful teams have one thing in common, they are invisible. It is the team that excels. So, from the individual success, we move into collective appreciation. In the competitive world, this makes a huge difference.Your team is an extension of your abilities. You achieve a lot more with them. When positive emotions run in your team and colleagues are proud of themselves, it is a great ground for a high-performing team.Have you ever had a chance to promote someone? How did it make you feel? Proud? Perhaps also accomplished or relieved. Making someone else’s dream come true is one of the unspoken jobs which managers do. It is not automatic. It takes time and attention to detail. These are eventually translated into the success and career development of the manager himself.<h1 data-selectable-paragraph="">2. You interact with all different kinds of people</h1>Management job teaches you to be open and understanding. I don’t know anyone who would not experience fraction and problems with cultural differences in a management job. It is shocking. You have your management style, but it’s not working for all people. Bummer! Or I would rather call it an opportunity.The world is getting smaller and people travel to work in different countries. I had a lot of luck with my team. They created a vivid environment to work in. My colleagues were from Mexico, Slovakia, Moldava, France, Latvia, or Ukraine. Every one of them was special and ambitious in his way. To handle their personalities, working cultures, and dreams kept me busy for months, and even years.What I enjoy is hiring. If you can hire a person for your team, who do you have in mind? Someone who would fit your current atmosphere. Yet, the best thing is to look for new, ambivalent, creative disruptors. They bring new ideas and challenge the status quo. So, not hiring someone because they would not ‘fit’ is shallow and short-sighted.<h1 data-selectable-paragraph="">3. Every day is a special day</h1>Management job is a bit of personal as well as organizational psychology. You help the individual the same way as you help your company. You grow both and on top of that, you grow yourself. Management job never stops and always brings new peaks to climb, decisions to digest, and unpleasant things to sort.There is a lot of uncertainty. That’s not for everyone. One time, I worked closely with my colleague on promotion, the moment he was ready, he left the company. It is easy to say that we should expect the unexpected, but a general sense leads us to stability. Not that there is none in the management job, but its complexity requires flexibility.<h1 data-selectable-paragraph="">4. Learner and teacher at once</h1>Have you ever wanted to teach because you knew better than the teacher? As a manager, you have a chance and you are both a student and a teacher. You will test your ability to lead, make an order, authority, create a team spirit, and general communication.Communicate in a way, others can understand. That is a challenge. In the business environment the biggest one. There is so much lost in translation, within email rows, and on pointless meetings. You can though make it better and your way. You can change the system and make people happier.Moreover, you appear in control. Control makes people confident. So, if you are a diligent student, you can be a diligent teacher and leader for your team. Leader who inspires and teacher who employees won’t leave to a different job.<h1 data-selectable-paragraph="">5. You know the strategical gossips</h1>The very important one. Knowing what is happening behind the scene is essential for making the right choices. Executive roles have no idea what all managers have to decide and digest. Plenty of things are confidential and secretive. Yet, there is usually enough space to plot around what’s the best for your team.Being able to take part in never-ending strategical meetings is both interesting, but also demanding. When I visited my first strategy meeting, I didn’t say anything. I just listened. Later, I was able to steer a direction and push for solutions from which others could benefit. My mission has always been to work for others and make their work-life better.So, socializing with other managers is needed like bread needs butter. You know it, you can make it smooth. The secret is that many people don’t even realize they give a lot of information. That’s a great advantage of listening. Let them talk and truly understand what is happening. Knowledge matters.<h1 data-selectable-paragraph="">Final thought</h1>Be a manager, if you can. It is a job that eventually might not be for you, but it’s worth trying and aspirating for. You grow as a person. Just overcome the first two hectic and stressful years. Then, you harvest new skills and general business common sense.
