PSYCHOPATHY Defined

PSYCHOPATHY Defined

Psychopathy is a condition characterized by the absence of empathy and the blunting of other affective states. Callousness, detachment, and a lack of empathy enable psychopaths to be highly manipulative.

Psychopathy can simply be defined as a chronic mental disorder comprised of abnormal and violent social behaviors with little or no remorse or guilt.

The term 'psychopath' is not an official diagnosis. Instead a doctor may diagnose someone with specific traits they associate with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) like lack of empathy, remorse and persistent antisocial behavior.

Not all psychopaths are criminals or killers

Not all psychopaths are criminals or killers

The reality of psychopathy is more complicated than just violence. While their elevated impulsiveness, tendency to deflect blame, and other antisocial traits incline them often (but by no means always) to criminality, NOT ALL PSYCHOPATHS ARE KILLERS OR EVEN CRIMINALS, many do not have histories of violence.

There are other personality traits and forms of pathology aside from psychopathy that may contribute to aggressive behavior.
