Life Vision

Life Vision

Having a life vision can help you visualize a life you want for yourself in the future, and then figure out how to move towards it from your current position.

Developing a life vision can give us clarity and focus on what needs to be done in the present.

Building A Life Vision

  1. Visualize what we want our lives to be like in the next five or ten years.
  2. Imagine your life in the ‘future-time’ by writing down specific questions about your location, work, finances, relationships and health. Example: What is my profession?
  3. Now ask yourself the same questions, focused on the near future(say 2 years).
  4. Repeat the questions the third time, choosing a time closer to the present(like in the next six months).
  5. You will get clarity on what steps need to be taken to accomplish the change that is envisioned.

Building Values

After the life vision exercise, your career moves and values will be consistent with your envisioned future goal. The next step is to write down your values, things that matter to you on a piece of paper.

Your values can include your working style, habits, prestige, a feeling of authority, freedom and flexibility. Stuff that you can check against the next job offer that comes your way.

The Hidden Job Market

Instead of mindlessly applying for jobs through online job postings, you need to:

  1. Take an active approach to getting called for interviews by directly getting in touch with the recruiter/person in charge.
  2. Network with people as much as you can.
  3. Communicate clearly with the recruiters about your skills and motivations.
  4. Have lots of conversations with people to improve your odds of getting your favourite kind of work.
