When you write, the purpose is to express, not to impress. You don't have to consider yourself a writer to become good at it. Some practical tips can help to sharpen your writing.

Tips to sharpen your writing

  • Turn prepositional phrases into adjectives. Prepositional phrases often start with "in" or "of". When it describes the noun, try to make a one-word adjective. CEOs in the tech sector /Tech CEOs.
  • Replace adverbs with strong verbs. The child cries loudly / The child screamed.
  • Avoid passive voice.
  • Delete "that" when possible.
  • Be careful with intensifiers. Aim for a better adjective. It's very cold / It's freezing.
  • Don't use conjunctions. You can often replace it with a comma. The long and crowded flight / The long, crowded flight.
