How To Schedule Your Day For Peak Creative Performance
About four years ago I started working for myself. I wanted the freedom and flexibility to own my schedule and the space to bring my ideas to life. One of the biggest challenges was structuring my time so I was fully experiencing the benefits of working for myself while also being as creative and productive as possible.

The Experimental Mindset

Instead of following the tips from other people, one should have an experimental mindset to try and build a lifestyle that suits them. And this in itself is a process.

Order and Creativity

We are not very good at multitasking because can truly focus on only one thing at a time.

Discipline leads to creativity. If we are able to bring discipline and order in our daily lives, by decluttering and focusing on the important things, we can be more productive and achieve a lot.

Take a break

Think about your life. What is really important to you? How would you like to live your life?

Write down the things that are truly important to you, the things that ten years from now...

The things you are doing every day

  • Write them down. For example, wake up, eat breakfast, go to work…
  • Highlight the tasks that you do daily that are in line with your priorities.
  • The highlighted stuff is the important stuff that you do every day. Everything else is urgent.

Cut down on the urgent stuff

  • Some “urgent” activities will just need to go. Maybe you can wait until later after all to check your picture on Facebook.
  • Some “urgent” activities will need to be delegated. Your assistant, if you have one, could actually pay that bill.
  • Some others will be better organized. You could actually make a batch of lunches every Sunday and Wednesday.

Having No Routine

Having no routine or structure is so much more draining mentally, physically, and emotionally than any routine could ever be.

Why You Need a Routine

  • It gives you structure, builds forward-moving habits, and creates momentum that will carry you on the days when you feel like you don't have the strength to carry yourself.
  • Following a daily routine can help you establish priorities, limit procrastination, keep track of goals, and even make you healthier.
  • It lowers your reliance on willpower and motivation.

Start the day with a mantra

... to get you into a positive mood for the day ahead. Put your mind in a good state right away, because left unchecked it will try to tell you the things that are wrong.

Pick a phrase or question that resonates with you. It could be as simple as smiling and saying "thank you" out loud, acknowledging that you have been gifted with another day.
