MORE IDEAS FROM The Design of Everyday Things
Most of us face difficulty in setting desired temperature in a two door refrigerator because we have no idea where the thermostat is really situated and how the controls work. We have a wrong mental model of how it really works even with instructions available.
The mental model of a device is formed largely by interpreting it's perceived actions and it's visible structure. When the system image is incoherent or inappropriate ( like the refrigerator's ) then the user cannot easily use the device.
Hint : Make things visible.
Form an appropriate goal but mess up in the performance , and you have made a slip. Form the wrong goal and you've made a mistake.
If something is truly revolutionary it is unlikely that anyone will quite know how to design it right the first time, it will take several tries. But if a newly introduced product fails in its first few attempts it is likely dead.
[E]ven the best-trained and best-motivated designers can go wrong when they listen to their instincts instead of testing their ideas on actual users. Designers know too much about their product to be objective judges. The features they have come to love and prefer may not be understood or preferred by the future customers.
If you think something is clever and sophisticated, beware - it is probably self indulgence.
There are 2 types of errors:
(a person intends to do an action and ends up doing something else). Can be:
(correct action applied to the wrong object),
(wrong goal or wrong plan formed). Can be:
(correct diagnose, wrong action),
(failing due to distraction)
Gives the hidden connection in the design which triggers the shape between the gaps in space and elements used on that canvas.
Our brain sees the things a whole rather than in a parts of whole. Based on this psychology we create the design with some parts of shapes and objects which in wholesome gives the shape we want that viewers to grab.
The two terms are often believed to mean the same thing, but the truth could not be more different.
While one needs formal training in order to become an interior designer, the same cannot be stated about the interior decorator, whose mission is to take care of the aesthetics of a certain space. Therefore, before contacting any of the above, make sure you know exactly what you want to improve at your house.
