The idea that the more you pursue feeling better all the time, the less satisfied you become, as pursuing something only reinforces the fact that you lack it in the first place. The idea was popularised by Allan Watts and originated in Tao Te Ching or Zen Buddhism. Essentially the more you try and grab hold of something, the more it slips through your fingers.
