The truth about ability & Accomplishment

Why some people achieve more & some achieve less than expected?

The key to answering this is mobilizing our resources for learning & not for protecting our egos...the low-effort syndrome. Working hard isn't something that makes us vulnerable (to possible failure & so...judgment), it makes you smarter.

Prodigies or not, we all have interests that can blossom into abilities. With the right mindset & right teaching, people are capable of a lot more than we think - the potential to develop.

MORE IDEAS FROM Mindset

Fixed vs. Growth mindset
  • When success means being smart and failure being dumb, it stunts potential & possibilities in life. Growth mindset helps you love challenges, learn from mistakes, enjoy effort, seek new strategies, and keep learning....basically the main ingredients for meaningful success.
  • With a fixed mindset, the only goal of education becomes prove worth, competence, intelligence...about the label. But growth mindset is about believing people can develop their abilities. It's about setting high standards but offering a nurturing environment too where it's possible to learn, think, and make your own decisions.
  • Focusing on the ability to learn rather than on intelligence and talent, encourages a growth mindset. Praising intelligence & talent makes confidence volatile...because it puts the source of motivation on external validation.

Where do Mindsets come from

How we interpret whatever we see or experience in the world around and within us is called our mindset. It's a very powerful influencer on what course our life takes.

And some of the factors that affect in a big way the kind of mindset (fixed or growth) we develop are -

  • Being judged and labeled.
  • How are friends, colleagues, and other people in our life usually react to situations or things.
  • How the people we look up to for guidance speak of intelligence, talent, learning, success, & failure.

Changing Mindset
  • Mindsets guide how we interpret any event, action, and thought, "This means...". Changing our self-talk from a judging one to growth-oriented one...what can I learn from this? How can I improve?...That's growth mindset. & it's based on the belief in change...finding a way to use your abilities.
  • Drop the good-bad, strong-weak thinking. You're an unfinished human being and every mistake/failure/setback is a clue to do it better next time. New beliefs exist along with the old ones & become stronger over time - we develop a different way to think, feel, and act.
  • Sometimes, simply learning about growth mindset can mobilize people to persevere & meet challenges.

...so many people declare they have it:

  • If they are open minded and flexible, they said they have it
  • If they are kind to people, they said they have it

But a growth mindset is not something you declare, it’s a really difficult journey you take over a long period of time.

Growth Mindset:

  • tend to understand basic abilities as malleable, and believe they can be developed over time.
  • love new challenges and view setbacks as opportunities to learn.
  • display better self-esteem, more resilience, and enjoy better outcomes in life

Fixed Mindset:

  • tend to believe their basic attributes )like intelligence and talent) are innate and set in stone;
  • avoid difficult tasks, fearing that failure might expose a lack in ability.
