Creativity increases productivity
Adobe’s “State of Create: 2016” report, for example, found links between creativity and productivity in the workplace. The study, which surveyed 5,000 adults in five countries, found that companies that invest in creativity are 78% more likely to “increase employee productivity.”

How to Be More Creative

To be considered creative, something—an idea, a solution, a product, a process—must be both novel and appropriate. In other words, it must be original and useful in some way.

Creativity is no longer optional
Jobs where creativity is optional simply aren’t around any more.

Unless you’re an accountant doing the same three calculations year-in and year-out, in which case your boss is already wondering how to best replace you anyway, coming up with ideas is part of your job. Project managers must strike the right balance between online and offline communication. Marketers are forced to transition their brands to the web. Even burger flippers can score tons of loyalty points with customers for creative, individual interactions

Continuous Incubation
The concept of modern psychology incubation (when we let everything we know about a topic sit in our subconscious) plays on is called the Zeigarnik effect. It is our brain’s tendency to remember all things unfinished and repeatedly float them back to the surface of our consciousness. Therefore, a life designed for maximum creativity is simply a life designed for maximum incubation.

The seven categories of creative work
  1. Prioritize: To have the space for creative work, you need to have a clear picture of what you’re doing in any given moment. The clearer your priorities, the more focused you can be on the task at hand. GTD or other creative habits help.
  2. Generate: Great insights certainly come randomly, so this is why you need to roll the dice as many times as possible. Build a creative habit. Make a daily deliverable, whether it’s 100-words a day, a 30-second song etc...
  3. Explore: When you Explore, you collect the raw materials for the insights you’ll have when you Generate.
  4. Research: To solve a creative problem, you have to learn whatever you can about that problem.
  5. Recharge: When you rest, you allow your unconscious mind to work on your creative problems.
  6. Polish: A great idea won’t work if you don’t execute it well.
  7. Administrate: you make it all work, so you can keep doing what you’re doing.

4 Stages of Creative Control

Social psychologist Graham Wallas proposed four “stages of control” for creative work:

  • Preparation, you’re learning everything you can about the problem so that everything about it is “in [your] head”.
  • Incubation, you’re allowing your unconscious mind to work on the problem. It happens while you’re “taking an easy walk over wooded hills,” or while you’re sleeping. Whatever you do to achieve “complete physical freshness and quiet well-being.”
  • Illumination: the solution comes to you. It doesn’t tend to happen while you’re sitting at your desk. It might be when you’ve just woken up.
  • Verification, you ensure that the idea meets up to your standards. Does it solve the problems you identified during the Preparation stage?

What can not be automated

Machines skew toward tactical applications.

On the other hand, work that requires a high degree of imagination, creative analysis, and strategic thinking is harder to automate:

  • managing and developing people
  • apply expertise to decision making
  • planning
  • creative work
” Computers are great at optimizing, but not so great at goal-setting. Or even using common sense."

The Wizard of Oz View of Technology

In Oz, the wizard is shown to run the kingdom through some complex machine hidden behind a curtain. Many executives may think themselves the wizard; enthralled by the idea that AI technology will allow them to shed millions of dollars in labor costs.

However, the point of technology, is to boost productivity, not cut the workforce. And for every robot we put out we need someone to tell it what to do, to service it and to maintain it.
