Until the 1960s, neuroscientists thought that damaged brains cells could not be replaced. But that theory was disproved when researchers started to notice the creation of neurons (neurogenesis) in the adult brains of humans and animals.

Studies show that aerobic exercise plays a key role in helping to repair damage to neurons. Exercise increases the levels of a protein named brain-derived neurotrophic factor that boosts cognitive function, including learning and memory.

The original American basketball game

Dr James Naismith invented the original American basketball game in 1891. He wanted to create a non-contact sport that could be played indoors. In January 1892, he published the rules in The Triangle, the school newspaper of Springfield College.

Although other rules have been added, the original 13 rules of the game still form the heart of the game.
