Smaller images using AVIF

The built-in Image Optimization API now supports AVIF images, enabling 20% smaller images compared to WebP.

AVIF images can take longer to optimize compared to WebP, so this feature is opt-in using the new images.formats property in next.config.js,as shown in the picture above.

The Module pattern is used to mimic the concept of classes so that we can store both public and private methods and variables inside a single object — similar to how classes are used in other programming languages like Java or Python.

That allows us to create a public-facing API for the methods that we want to expose to the world, while still encapsulating private variables and methods in a closure scope.

WebAssembly is not tied to any hardware architecture, so it can be executed on several different platforms without needing to re-compile. When a WASM module is executed, it is compiled to machine-native code either ahead-of-time (AOT) or just-in-time (JIT).

WASM runtimes such as Chrome’s V8, Wasmtime or Wasmer perform this compilation automatically. I can see this becoming useful in scenarios where your code gets moved automatically from a central cloud instance to an edge compute network when a spike in traffic causes a certain module to be pummeled by incoming requests.
