The boomerang effect happens when you deliver a message hoping to produce a certain response or reaction, but the reaction turns out to be the opposite of what you had hoped it would be.Some of it stems from a natural desire not to conform. For those who have a stronger natural inclination to assert their autonomy and independence, doing the opposite of what you are asked or told is a way to communicate that you are in control. The boomerang effect is also sometimes called the psychological reactance theory.

<ul><li>Understand what you are asking: this means understanding your message from the perspective of the audience. And then, it’s creating a targeted and effective message based on that understanding.</li><li>Soften your delivery when the content is tough: If the content is already tough, the delivery needs to be softer.</li><li> Don’t oversell or overcommunicate. You might think that more communication, more messages, a longer presentation will help you persuade the audience and assure our intended response. Research shows that’s not the case.</li></ul>

How to avoid the Boomerang Effect

We can all be better communicators and presenters and humans when we remember:<ul><li>We don’t like messages that remind us we aren’t in control.</li><li>We don’t like to feel pressure to conform.</li><li>We need tough messages to be delivered calmly.</li><li>We like to have choices.</li><li>We don’t want to be bombarded with communication.</li></ul>

When speaking in front of people, you have about 10 seconds to capture their attention before they tune out, so you must do something interesting.
Start with a prop. It can be any physical object, such as using a piece of fruit as a metaphor.

<li>Some people will ask, "Show a hand, who's seen this before? or "show of hands, who's heard this before?"</li>
<li>Adding humour in the first minute also helps the audience to engage.</li>

In the first minute, captivate the attention, using humour, provocative questions, or props. However, don't tell them yet what you're going to talk about. First, capture their attention.
No matter how dry your subject is, use stories to move people emotionally because they are persuaded by anecdotes, even though it's a logical fallacy.

When you're in front of a group of people, you're performing. You need to move your body and embody characters.
Try to bring people to the present tense of your story, act it out, make it vivid in their minds. Your goal is for them to walk away behaving differently.

<li>In the body of the presentation, you used stories.</li>
<li>Now they're wide open to you who can use words to influence and inspire them. You can drop whatever nugget you want them to take away.</li>

Most successful businesses didn't start with an obvious business that they could build to a huge scale.  It is always someone who started something that close relations thought was a dumb idea. Then the person made it only for a few people before it spread. For example, every podcast launched started with less than 100 listeners. These listeners then told other people, who told other people. That is how it spreads.

What we should do is ask,<ul><li>Who is here that I can help today?</li><li>Who needs what I do?</li><li>Who will pay money to have this problem solved?</li></ul> If you don't have trust, you might be tempted to race for attention. It's like spamming people to get their attention. Social media thrives on people who try to race for attention because that's how they make a living. Instead, ask,  "who exactly am I here for?"

Permission marketing is the opposite of spam. It is messages people desire to get. The messages are anticipated and relevant. A simple test is: If you didn't show up on Instagram or send out that email, would people reach out and ask where you are? If they're not missing you, you are not doing permission marketing.

The internet is not a mass medium. Television could reach 40 million people at once, but the internet doesn't reach 40 million people at the same time. The internet may have 40 million channels that each reaches 100 people. It's micro, not mass.  Finding people who are interested in what you're doing isn't that hard since they are already gathered by interest.

We have been conditioned into believing that we're not able to speak to people who are smarter or wiser or richer than we are. But we can remedy this by making small promises and keeping them. Show up to small groups of people, known as the smallest viable audience and consistently offer them something, so that they learn to expect it from you.

How to earn trust, not attention

We believe that the only way to win is to have the biggest possible audience. But it actually never works like that. The way it works is to find the smallest group of people who trust you enough. When you overwhelm them with delight, they will tell others. Any brand starts that way. Facebook started serving 100 Harvard students who needed a date. That was Facebook.
