Ladders and Nets

These are methods for capturing stones:

  • In a ladder, at each step the attacker reduces the defender's liberties from two to one (see image)
  • In a net, one or more stones are captured by enclosing them, as it were, in a net of stones which has holes in it, all of which the attacker can block.

In general, capturing a stone in a net is considered better than capturing it in a ladder, because a net does not run the risk of a ladder block on the other side of the board.

Staying connected with basic shapes

Keeping your stones connected is the first important beginner lesson. This can mean more than placing adjecent stones (nobi). These are the basic shapes:

  • One point jump (ikken tobi) or two point jumps (nikken horaki): On straight lines one or two position away are good moves.
  • Diagonal (kosumi)
  • Small or the large knight (keima & ogeima) moves can be connected if closer to the edge.

No Repetition (“Ko”)

A completely identical board position MUST NOT appear twice in one game. Therefore, before you can recapture a stone that just captured yours, you have to PLAY ELSEWHERE at least ONCE. This called "Ko".

Go games can be really long. However, they must never be endless. The “Ko” rule is created to prevent that.
