The 7 Hermetic Principles

“THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental.”This Principle embodies the truth that "All is Mind." It explains that THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of “The Material Universe”; the “Phenomena of Life”; “Matter”; “Energy”; and, in short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT which in itself is UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and thought of as AN UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND.

1. The Principle of Mentalism

“As above, so below; as below, so above.”This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life. […] And the grasping of this Principle gives one the means of solving many a dark paradox, and hidden secret of Nature. […] Just as a knowledge of the Principles of Geometry enables man to measure distant suns and their movements, while seated in his observatory, so a knowledge of the Principle of Correspondence enables Man to reason intelligently from the Known to the Unknown.

2. The Principle of Correspondence

“Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.”This Principle explains that the differences between different manifestations of Matter, Energy, Mind, and even Spirit, result largely from varying rates of Vibration. From THE ALL, which is Pure Spirit, down to the grossest form of Matter, all is in vibration - the higher the vibration, the higher the position in the scale. The vibration of Spirit is at such an infinite rate of intensity and rapidity that it is practically at rest - just as a rapidly moving wheel seems to be motionless.

“Everything is Dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled.”An understanding of the Principle will enable one to change his own Polarity, as well as that of others, if he will devote the time and study necessary to master the art.

4. The Principle of Polarity

“Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.”There is always an action and a reaction; an advance and a retreat; a rising and a sinking. This is in the affairs of the Universe, suns, worlds, men, animals, mind, energy, and matter. This law is manifest in the creation and destruction of worlds; in the rise and fall of nations; in the life of all things; and finally in the mental states of Man.

5. The Principle of Rhythm

“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”The masses of people are carried along, obedient to environment; the wills and desires of others stronger than themselves; heredity; suggestion; and other outward causes moving them about like pawns on the Chessboard of Life.

6. The Principle of Cause and Effect

“Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes.”This is true not only of the Physical Plane, but of the Mental and even the Spiritual Planes […] No creation, physical, mental or spiritual, is possible without this Principle […] The Principle of Gender works ever in the direction of generation, regeneration, and creation. Everything, and every person, contains the two Elements or Principles, or this great Principle, within it, him or her. Every Male thing has the Female Element also; every Female contains also the Male Principle.

7. The Principle of Gender

“The purpose of this work is not the enunciation of any special philosophy or doctrine, but rather is to give to the students a statement of the Truth that will serve to reconcile the many bits of knowledge that they may have acquired, but which are apparently opposed to each other and which often serve to discourage and disgust the beginner.”

The Kybalion Hermetic Philosophy, originally published by the Yogi Publication Society in 1908 by a person or persons under the pseudonym of "the Three Initiates", is a book claiming to be the essence of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus. Its philosophies, in conjunction with others, have become founding pillars within the New Thought movement of the early 1910s. The book early on makes the claim that it makes its appearance in one's life when the time is appropriate and includes axioms and insights similar to those found in the Book of Proverbs.

What to expect from your manager

<ul><li>They create a human connection between you and your manager, which in turn leads to building trust.</li><li>They serve as a regular opportunity to discuss privately whatever needs discussing.</li></ul>

Purpose of 1-1s

<ul><li>Come prepared and have a list of things you want to discuss. Both of you share the responsibility of having a good 1-1.</li><li>Spend a few minutes talking about life outside of work to get to know each other better and get more comfortable with each other.</li><li>Schedule meetings with some predictability so both of you can prepare for them.</li></ul>

Tips for 1-1s

Take responsibility for your experiences at work, and don't rely on your manager to set the entire tone for your relationship.<ol><li>Know yourself → Figure out what you want to do and learn, and what will make you happy.</li><li>Go after what you want → Prepare for 1-1s, ask to work on projects, ask for feedback etc.</li><li>Understand their role → Their job is to do the best thing for the company and the team, not to make you happy all the time.</li><li>Own your problems → When you have a problem, ask for advice on how to tackle it instead of demanding that your manager solve it for you.</li></ol>

How to be managed

<ul><li>If you seek a promotion, then ask them what you need to do to get it.</li><li>If you are giving a presentation or you have written a design document, then ask them to review it and make suggestions.</li><li>If you are having issues with a teammate and you are unsure of how to tackle them, ask your manager for help on finding a solution.</li></ul>

How to Work With Your Manager

<ul><li>Know your goals (both short and long term). It will make it easier to find the right mentor. </li><li>Who do you look up to? Keep a running list of the jobs and people you are visualizing.</li><li>Do the research. Take notes on the path that person took to get to where they are today.</li><li>Be cognizant of your existing network. The more aware someone already is of your work and abilities, the more effective they will be at mentoring you. </li><li>Recognize the difference between a mentor and a sponsor. For example, mentors give advice but can't give you a new job, raise, or promotion. </li></ul>

Finding the Right Mentor

<ul><li>Have an elevator pitch ready. Be clear of your goals and why you think this person is the right mentor for you. Be upfront about your time commitment, what you're willing to put into the relationship and what you expect from them. </li><li>If it's a cold email, it's okay to start with the informational interview ask. But again, be specific about what you like about the person's work and why you want to meet. </li><li>When you feel someone is the right fit, do your best to make the ask with more than just a phone call or email. </li></ul>

Making the Ask

<ul><li>Goals still matter. If you mention your specific, achievable goals from the beginning of the relationship, your mentor can help you stay on track at each meeting.</li><li>Meet consistently. Figure out how often, how long, how you want to meet and make it consistent. </li><li>Set an agenda. </li><li>Be open to feedback: positive or constructive.</li><li>Decide on an end date. A good rule of thumb is usually four to six months, with the option to keep meeting informally.</li><li>Make sure not to monopolize the session with personal issues or make it only about venting.</li></ul>

The Case for Reverse Mentoring

Mentoring is most successful when you take the time to think about what you are qualified to teach, what other people in your organization may be interested in learning from you, and how it overlaps with your company’s business objectives. Before pursuing a reverse mentorship, think about:<ul><li>What lessons are you willing to share?</li><li>What challenges is the company facing that you might have insights, information, or expertise on?</li><li>How can you communicate your knowledge to someone else without overwhelming them or making it about yourself?</li></ul>

Figure out what you have to offer

During your next one-on-one meeting with your boss, you could say something like, “I have learned a great deal from the senior colleagues in our organization, and in return, I’d like to take the opportunity to share some of my skills within the organization.”When it comes to sharing your idea with colleagues and peers, your best bet is to reach out to like-minded, curious individuals who may be interested in collaborating or taking you up on the offer.

Voice your desire

How you actually begin a mentoring relationship will largely depend on who you collaborate with. Make your intentions and expectations clear from the start. Together, you should discuss:<ul><li>What’s the objective of this mentorship? Is it to help them build a new skill or to learn more about a different generation?</li><li>How will the mentoring be implemented? Should it be a one-time activity, last a few weeks, or be a long-term commitment?</li><li>How will you measure your success? Is there a goal they are aiming to reach? How often will check in on progress?</li></ul>

Set clear expectations

Recognize that reverse mentoring may be uncomfortable for some people, especially those in positions of power who are not used to being in the passenger’s seat. If you find a senior leader struggling to lean into their vulnerabilities, guide them with empathy. Ensure them that your conversations will be confidential and that you understand this may be hard for them. Reiterate that the goal of the mentorship is to learn from each other without judgment. Essentially, model the behavior you want to see from your mentee.

Be patient and humble

Mentoring is always a two-way street, whether it is reverse mentorship or the traditional kind. While you’re mentoring a senior colleague, use the opportunity to learn more about how things get done on their team, gain new perspectives on how decisions are made and build your credibility as a young professional. Place them in your shoes by asking how they might handle the various challenges you face. Know that this isn’t about showing off but a genuine intent on both ends to share what you have learned and benefit the other person.
