The Glycemic Index

A food rating system to assign value to food items based on how quicklyΒ they affects your blood sugar level when that food is eaten.

Foods which brake down quickly by your body and cause a rapid increase in blood sugar have a high GI rating.Some examples are (i)sugary food (ii)sugar drinks (iii)white rice.

Low or medium GI foods breaks down more slowly and cause a gradual rise in blood sugar levels. They include veggies and fruits ,whole grains.

It's useful to understand the glycaemic index, for people who are trying to control weight or having diabetes.

Excessive Sugar Intake

The excessive consumption of sugar is linked to an increased risk of poor health outcomes such as:

  • heart diseases;
  • type 2 diabetes;
  • weight gain;
  • higher blood pressure;
  • inflammation and many more.

It's not recommended to consume sugar that is more than ten percent of your daily calories from added sugar.
