W. Somerset Maugham: Hypocrisy Is A Whole-Time Job

The way successful VCs make decisions is different from the way traditional corporations do: They use what we call the venture mindset. One of its hallmarks is a high level of comfort with failure. VCs expect up to 80% of their investments to fail. This is a feature—not a bug—of their business model. The investment thesis is that even if 19 of 20 start-ups fail, 1 investment will be a home run and cover the losses from all the failures combined—and then some. In other words, home runs matter; strikeouts don’t.

VCs don’t worry about protecting capital from failures and losses. They fear missing out on an opportunity that might change the destiny of a company or an entire sector. As Alex Rampell of venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) told us, “In the VC world, errors of omission are much more damaging than errors of commission.” Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital echoed that sentiment in a Vox interview: “If you invest in something that doesn’t work, you lose 1x your money. If you miss Google, you lose 10,000x your money,” he said. VCs don’t seek common denominators; they look for outliers.

Venture capitalists’ unique approach to investment and innovation has played a pivotal role in launching one-fifth of the largest U.S. public companies. And three-quarters of the largest U.S. companies founded in the past 50 years would not have existed or achieved their current scale without VC support. The question is, Why? What makes venture firms so good at finding start-ups that go on to achieve tremendous success? What skills do they have that experienced, networked, and powerful large corporations lack? The authors’ research reveals that the venture mindset is characterized by several principles: the individual over the group, disagreement over consensus, exceptions over dogma, and agility over bureaucracy. This article offers guidance to traditional firms in using the VC mindset to spur innovation.

Make Decisions with a VC Mindset

Using that intrinsically labelled protein, I always have three different settings in my lectures.The first one is, this intrinsically labelled protein shows you, beyond any discussion, that you are what you eat. In fact, you are what you just ate.

Now, funny enough, if you eat that same protein after you’ve done a little exercise, more of the protein is converted to muscle. So, if you’re physically active, you are MORE of what you just ate. Then, to the third part of the lecture, I show you that with physical inactivity, you become anabolically resistant. So, if you become physically less active, you are LESS of what you just ate.

Now, the problem is, when you become sick or you get surgery, you have two issues: you exercise less or you become less physically active, but you also eat less. So, it’s a double whammy downwards. And that’s what makes us so vulnerable to a short period of inactivity or sickness.

You take a group of group of young, healthy people, who presumably have lots of anabolic capacity. You put them in a cast for 1 week, and you immediately demonstrate, upon removing the cast, that the leg that has been immobile for a week is 35% less responsive to protein assimilation than the other leg. That’s an anabolic resistance factor of 35%, that is far greater than what you see in an aged individual. So, with 1 week of inactivity, you (can) make a young leg or young muscle respond completely like a senescent muscle.

And now the fun thing: you take an aged individual, who might have 20% or 30 % less anabolic response to protein than a young person. If you exercise them, you can bring them up to the same level as a young person. These two factors suggest that activity might be the main determinant of anabolic resistance, and an aging individual or age within an individual is simply a proxy for activity. So, muscle itself doesn’t seem to get that old. It actually still responds completely normal and we can normalize for age by physical activity.

Erwin McManus: How To Know You’re Pursuing Your Dream

The Peter Principle states that every member of a hierarchy will eventually rise to their level of incompetence, or final placement. This position is the furthest you can be promoted with the skills that you possess. In other words, employees continue to receive promotions as long as they’re competent in their current position.

As individuals, our skills and competencies vary. You might be a genius software developer, and be very proud of that fact. But this doesn’t make you the best fit for a consultancy; perhaps you might simply be unable to cope with the constant pressure of that business.Some of us are able to rise all the way to the top of a hierarchy without reaching our level of incompetence, so we switch to other hierarchies and find it there. This is called compulsive incompetence. Just look at Socrates: A great teacher; not such a great defense lawyer.

Incompetence Is Inescapable

Perhaps you’re harboring doubts about the Peter Principle, as you can recall several cases where it didn’t apply in your own workplace. If someone is promoted even though he obviously reached his level of incompetence, this must be an exception to the rule, right?Nope. That’s called a pseudo-promotion.Pseudo-promotions are just sideways shifts, leaving employees in the same place in the food chain with no real increase in power. Percussive Sublimation is what happens when someone who is already at their level of incompetence receives a promotion in another division.

A Lateral Arabesque promotes someone incompetent by offering them a shiny new job title. Take a certain Mr. Schmidt, who is now an incompetent Senior Facility Manager, even though he did the exact same job as a maintenance man. The larger the organization, the more Lateral Arabesques you’ll find.

When it seems impossible that someone so incompetent can be promoted, it might be Peter’s Inversion: a nurse wakes you up to remind you to take your sleeping pill; though the goal is for you to sleep, her reminding you was more important to her.This may seem counter-intuitive, but it isn’t. Competence is both relative and subjective, as it’s something usually determined by your superior. If a rule enjoins nurses to remind every patient of his pills, the nurse followed the rules to perfection. These non-exceptions show that the Peter Principle exists in any organization with a hierarchy.
