Why Creators Struggle To Release Projects (and Why People In General Don’t Take Action)

A paper published in Nature Metabolism shows conclusively that lactate is produced normally in humans after ingestion of carbohydrates. Lactate rapidly enters the bloodstream, even before glucose shows up. Far from being a toxic byproduct to be eliminated during hard exercise, dietary glucose is converted so rapidly to lactate that it preempts or shares top billing with glucose as the two main carbon-energy carriers in the body.

Lactate Rivals Glucose As An Energy Carrier

The results of the study show that the rapid conversion of glucose to lactate, starting initially in the intestines, is a way for the body to deal with a sudden dose of carbohydrates. Lactate, working with insulin, buffers the appearance of dietary glucose in the blood.Instead of a big glucose surge, we have a lactate and glucose surge after eating. And the more of it that is converted into lactate from glucose, the better it is to manage glucose. Lactate is a carbohydrate buffer.

Lactate Is A Carbohydrate Buffer

The new study confirms that lactate plays the same role during normal non-exercise activity and resting as in during intense exercise. It's evidence to show that lactate shouldn't be associated with anaerobic metabolism. It's just a normal response to consuming carbohydrates or to exercise. In exercise, lactate is utilized as the dominant fuel source. That's why our blood lactate increases as we exercise a little harder. It's not that we're making it as a waste product. It's getting into the blood because it needs to go to tissues that need it to continue their physiological performance.

Lactate Is Not A Waste Product; It Is, in Fact, A Fuel

The researchers found that the bodies of the volunteers began converting the dietary glucose into lactate before it even left the intestines. Levels of lactate began rising in arterial blood a mere 5 minutes after the meal, while glucose, often touted as the energy currency of the body, only showed up in the bloodstream 15 to 30 minutes after glucose ingestion.

Lactate: The First Responder

The first carbohydrate after a glucose meal gets into the blood as lactate because a) that's what intestinal cells do and because b) most of the glucose is captured by the liver before it is released into the blood for the muscles, where glucose is going to be converted to lactate. This shows that lactate is just a major energy highway for distributing carbohydrate—carbon energy flux.

In his 1984 book, “Exercise Physiology: Human Bioenergetics and Its Applications” George Brooks coined the term "lactate shuttle" to describe the body's metabolic feedback loop in which lactate is the intermediary sustaining most if not all tissues and organs.

The Lactate Shuttle Theory

Dr Brooks has shown, for example, that in many tissues, lactate is preferred as a fuel over glucose. During intense activity, the muscle mitochondria burn it preferentially and even shut off glucose and fatty acid fuel use. Brooks used tracers to show that human skeletal muscle, heart muscle and the brain prefer lactate to glucose as fuel and run more strongly on lactate. Lactate also signals fat tissue to stop breaking down fat for fuel.

One gap in these studies was what happens during normal non-exercise activity and resting. The current study fills that gap and supports the idea that when lactate levels in the blood remain high, it is a signal that something is disrupting the lactate shuttle cycle, not that lactate itself is harming the body."It's really informative about various medical conditions," Dr Brooks says. "I think what's significant about the current result is that it's just not a muscle thing. It starts with dietary carbohydrate. This was a missing piece in the puzzle."

It’s Just Not A Muscle Thing

A new paper refutes the notion that lactate is a danger sign of oxygen deprivation in the muscles or a toxic byproduct to be eliminated.

The way successful VCs make decisions is different from the way traditional corporations do: They use what we call the venture mindset. One of its hallmarks is a high level of comfort with failure. VCs expect up to 80% of their investments to fail. This is a feature—not a bug—of their business model. The investment thesis is that even if 19 of 20 start-ups fail, 1 investment will be a home run and cover the losses from all the failures combined—and then some. In other words, home runs matter; strikeouts don’t.

VCs don’t worry about protecting capital from failures and losses. They fear missing out on an opportunity that might change the destiny of a company or an entire sector. As Alex Rampell of venture firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) told us, “In the VC world, errors of omission are much more damaging than errors of commission.” Bill Gurley of Benchmark Capital echoed that sentiment in a Vox interview: “If you invest in something that doesn’t work, you lose 1x your money. If you miss Google, you lose 10,000x your money,” he said. VCs don’t seek common denominators; they look for outliers.

Venture capitalists’ unique approach to investment and innovation has played a pivotal role in launching one-fifth of the largest U.S. public companies. And three-quarters of the largest U.S. companies founded in the past 50 years would not have existed or achieved their current scale without VC support. The question is, Why? What makes venture firms so good at finding start-ups that go on to achieve tremendous success? What skills do they have that experienced, networked, and powerful large corporations lack? The authors’ research reveals that the venture mindset is characterized by several principles: the individual over the group, disagreement over consensus, exceptions over dogma, and agility over bureaucracy. Make Decisions with a VC Mindset

Using that intrinsically labelled protein, I always have three different settings in my lectures.The first one is, this intrinsically labelled protein shows you, beyond any discussion, that you are what you eat. In fact, you are what you just ate.

Now, funny enough, if you eat that same protein after you’ve done a little exercise, more of the protein is converted to muscle. So, if you’re physically active, you are MORE of what you just ate. Then, to the third part of the lecture, I show you that with physical inactivity, you become anabolically resistant. So, if you become physically less active, you are LESS of what you just ate.

Now, the problem is, when you become sick or you get surgery, you have two issues: you exercise less or you become less physically active, but you also eat less. So, it’s a double whammy downwards. And that’s what makes us so vulnerable to a short period of inactivity or sickness.

You take a group of group of young, healthy people, who presumably have lots of anabolic capacity. You put them in a cast for 1 week, and you immediately demonstrate, upon removing the cast, that the leg that has been immobile for a week is 35% less responsive to protein assimilation than the other leg. That’s an anabolic resistance factor of 35%, that is far greater than what you see in an aged individual. So, with 1 week of inactivity, you (can) make a young leg or young muscle respond completely like a senescent muscle.

And now the fun thing: you take an aged individual, who might have 20% or 30 % less anabolic response to protein than a young person. If you exercise them, you can bring them up to the same level as a young person. These two factors suggest that activity might be the main determinant of anabolic resistance, and an aging individual or age within an individual is simply a proxy for activity. So, muscle itself doesn’t seem to get that old. It actually still responds completely normal and we can normalize for age by physical activity.
