Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), which has previously also been known as ‘CreateSpace, allows authors to self-publish their books or creative works, and gain access to Amazon, where you can sell your book (and future books) for free.
KDP doesn’t charge anyone any money for writing and publishing a book nor for using its tools. Instead, Amazon only makes money off of you from the books you sell (more on that later).

You get to pick the price of your book, and depending on which price range your book falls, you either get 30% or 70% of your sales once printing costs or digital downloading costs have been subtracted.
The 30% or 70% that you, as the author, can get, are called royalties – it’s the amount of money you, as the author, can get from each book sold.

The author-dashboard is set up incredibly simple and understandable, even for a first-time author, who sometimes lack the ‘author terminology’.
And when you don’t know where something is, how to use a feature, or have questions about the set-up of your book, its dimensions, cover, or anything else, there ia a whole list of detailed answers (both for Mac and Windows) available. KDP has even provided Word templates, with the margins all set up for your book – the only thing left to do is place your text in it.

KDP provides an easy outline of some of the basics: what to include, where to put it, and what type of content it should have.
Alongside clear guidelines and instructions on how to set up the content within your book, the program also provides actual word documents which are set up with the correct margins. Just be sure to scroll through the whole book to check if everything is formatted correctly.

You can see a very realistic preview of what it will look like. You can virtually flip through your book and see everything ready to go.
On top of that, you can even order a proof copy, for which you only pay the cost of printing, and can check out your book and see if everything is how you want it. If needed you can then still make minor changes to your manuscript. Not everything can be edited after you publish your book, but holding the proof copy in your hands is quite surreal.

They walk you through it, step by step, and have little ‘info’ pop-up boxes for each category or item that you can fill in. You can’t move ahead to other sections either, meaning you have to work through the initial details in a focused manner, before you can move to upload your manuscript, book cover, and, as a last step, choose your pricing.

Kindle Unlimited (KU) is a program where Kindle readers pay a monthly fee and can read as many books as they want, and keep them as long as they desire. Why is this beneficial to you?
Because you get paid on how many people read pages of your book. The more pages KU members read, the more pieces of the pie you will get!

The first step, before you even start actually start your marketing process, is to brainstorm your own network. Most likely, you know a lot of people.
People who might be interested in your book or who have connections in the literary field or the marketing/advertising field. You never know who might be able to help. Reaching out is always worth a try! ‘No’ you have, ‘yes’ you can get.

If you wrote a book, it’s a good idea to also have your very own website. This way people can find you, your book, and any other creative projects of yours, whether past or future.
Share your website link in your social media bios or on your Amazon author profile (that is, if you used KDP to self-publish your book). A website can be a great way to keep people informed.
