Observations by Maria Montessori

  • Children had episodes of deep concentration and several repetitions of the same activity.
  • Given a choice, children showed more interest in practical activities and materials than toys, sweets or other rewards.
  • Self-disciple emerged spontaneously.

Montessori concluded that by working independently, children could become self-motivated learners. She started to see the role of the teacher as a facilitator in a prepared environment.

The goal is to grow children to become independent and responsible adults.
