A supernova is a massive explosion of a dying star. It can be so bright that it can outshine an entire galaxy.
There are two main types of supernovas:
Core-collapse supernovas occur when the core of a massive star collapses under its own gravity.
Type Ia supernovas occur when a white dwarf star accretes too much mass from a companion star.
