Reading Technique vs Reading Strategy

Sub - Vocalizing<ul><li>muttering, mouthing or internal monologue. </li><li>Reducing sub - vocalization leads to faster reading but poor processing of information. Sub - vocalization reduces the cognitive load and helps process complex information quickly.</li></ul>

Reading Techniques

<ol><li>Know when to use the reading techniques of grouping and sub-vocalizing - Text with predictable or less valuable information or text which require less cognitive load</li><li>Take Pause between reading sprints to process the information and look at the big picture. Also try to predict where the text is likely to take you.</li></ol>

<ol><li>The processing of information - our brain requires time to process complex or novel information which slows our reading speed</li><li>Exhaustion - If we try to speed read long and difficult text we won't be able to sustain the speed for long period of them. We will require to take breaks. So sustainable reading while taking pauses is the correct way</li></ol>

Many speed reading techniques are only suited for low to moderate-difficulty texts. Anyone who has used these techniques will know how difficult it is to sustain them persistently for study sessions that might be several hours long. It can be exhausting!

These are my tips (as someone who has read about 100+ pages of journal articles and textbooks every week for the last 10 years).

NOTE: This is not a FULL system. You still need to use other studying techniques for good encoding and retrieval, facilitated with a good note-taking system. Other techniques like scaffolding and smart skimming can also be useful.

These are NOT taught in this video.
