When Christ died on the cross, He gave us the opportunity to swap righteousness with Him in the sight of God. We have ALL sinned and become imperfect in the eyes of a perfectly holy and just God. We can’t harmonize with Him, fellowship with Him, etc. if we are imperfect. But if Christ advocates for us and says “I paid their debt with my perfection,” then we can be reconciled into relationship with God.
“Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation,” 2 Cor 5:18
