Ancient Greece

In ancient Greece, atheism was tolerated as one of many viewpoints on the gods. The diversity of Greek societies, with each city-state having its own customs, traditions, and governance, meant no religious orthodoxy.

The Enlightenment

In the 18th century, it was a period in European history when reason came to be valued more than faith. Atheistic thought reemerged in Europe during this time.

The 20th century

Atheism gained a significant position in the 20th century with the emergence of communist states promoting state atheism and legislation protecting freedom of thought.
