Regarding power, the mentor’s student is dependent on him, whereas the mentee’s job is to use him as a stepping stool, to soak up all the wisdom he has to offer. I realized the conflicting relationship between the two parties, it’s not a friendship, it’s a battle.

However I happily help someone when possible, just because I intuitively know we would live in a much better world, if everyone would act this way.

Mentoring also has direct benefits for the Mentor. Like he is able to consolidate his knowledge in the subject he teaches. He provably has more authorithy about the project and generally how things are done. He might receive recognition in the form of higher pay.

As a mentor I do hope, that the person I’m supporting would do the same for me if he had the opportunity at some point. And I assume more often than not, you can expect to receive some lasting loyality and respect by the people you mentored. You are building "prestige", since you are showing important leadership skills and you show that you are socially responsible. But if I witnessed that the person I mentored is betraying me, I would definitely whish, that I could take back what I have done for them.
