The fruit of the spirit is a list of nine attributes that Christians believe are produced in the lives of believers by the Holy Spirit. The list appears in the Bible in Galatians 5:22-23; Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance.
Love is the greatest of all the fruit of the spirit. It is a selfless, sacrificial love that is not based on feelings or circumstances. Love is patient, kind, and forgiving. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres.
Joy is a deep-seated inner peace and contentment that comes from knowing God and His love for us. Joy is not dependent on our circumstances, but on our relationship with God.
Peace is a state of tranquility and calmness that comes from knowing that God is in control. Peace is not the absence of problems, but the ability to handle them in a way that brings glory to God.
Longsuffering is the ability to endure difficult or frustrating situations with patience and grace. Longsuffering is not the same as passivity, but rather the ability to persevere through trials with hope and confidence.
Gentleness is a quality of kindness, patience, and understanding. It is the opposite of harshness, rudeness, and irritability. Gentleness is a fruit of the spirit that enables us to treat others with respect and compassion.
Goodness is a quality of being morally excellent and virtuous. It is the opposite of evil, wickedness, and sinfulness. Goodness is a fruit of the spirit that enables us to live in a way that is pleasing to God.
Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. It is the confidence that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He has promised. Faith is a fruit of the spirit that enables us to live by hope and not by sight.
Meekness is a quality of humility and submission. It is the opposite of pride, arrogance, and self-righteousness. Meekness is a fruit of the spirit that enables us to humble ourselves before God and others.
Temperance is the ability to control our desires and impulses. It is the opposite of indulgence, excess, and intemperance. Temperance is a fruit of the spirit that enables us to live in self-control and moderation.
The fruit of the spirit are not just a list of nice qualities to strive for. They are the very character of Christ that is reproduced in us as we grow in our relationship with Him. As we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, He will produce these qualities in our lives, making us more and more like Jesus. Strong roots reap sweet fruits.
