Finding the Middle Path

A common piece of advice is that one should indulge in things moderately. Hence one should do things diplomatically and walk the middle path as the world isn't "two plus two equals four" but rather there is an acceptable open window for "two plus two equals five or six". But what exactly is the "Middle Path", what could be considered a nonradical solution to things, is it a ratio of two or more different things done in proportion? And if so what is that proportion?
