Mark Twain wrote, "comparison is the death of joy."
While it is normal to compare yourself with others, it's also a waste of time. Your comparison could be a wrongful assessment as you may be comparing yourself to someone who isn't as happy as they pretend to be.
2 types of comparisons
- Downward comparison (comparing ourselves to those less fortunate): It activates the brain’s “lack” network, emphasizing our insecurity and focuses on safeguarding the status quo at the expense of risk and adventure.
- Upward comparison (comparing ourselves to those we envy)
"The root of joy is gratefulness... It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful."
