The Buddha taught that because no physical or mental object is permanent, desires for or attachments to either causes suffering.All things of this world come to an end. There is an impermanence in all things including you, and me.So connecting our source of happiness to things on the outside will only last as long as it lasts.If happiness is not on the outside, where is it?

Singer, the author states to be present is to be aware of who you are.He explains to be aware of who you are, lets make a list of what you're not...<ul><li>You're not simply your age, weight or height because that changes.</li><li>You're not simply you name because that's just a collection of letters. If your name changed it would not change who you are. </li><li>You're not just a summary of your life story, your job title, your relationships(being a wife, being a parent) because if all these things ceased to exist you would still be you.</li></ul>
