The Werther effect is a copycat effect of suicidal behavior following a suicide that has been widely publicized by the media.In 1974, David Phillips a American sociologist introduced the Werther effect. The name goes back to the novel by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe called The Sorrows of Young Werther.The novel's publication in 1774 was associated with an increased suicide rate. However, a causal connection is scientifically disputed.
