The process that provides us with vivid memories is the same one that we are using to imagine something. The mind treats past memory the same way as a future imagination. This also indicates that apart from the present moment, the past and future are just mental constructs.

Harry potter didn't conjure up a patronus by relying on a happy memory from the past but he relied on a happy memory from the future where he is living with sirius, someone who truly loves him. Someone who was his dad's best friend till the end.

The real problem doesn't come from feeling pain the in moment, but from the way we use memory and anticipation.

The object or event we fear is not always something happening in the immediate future. It may be the problem of next month’s bills, a social or natural disast...
