Narcissists lack empathy, they usually don’t work hard, and in a few weeks to a few months, they make the people around them miserable. And narcissism is very hard to change. So, if at all possible, just stay away.

A short-term fix for making employees stay is to pay the employees well. This is not a long-term strategy, as having people in a company for purely financial reasons wouldn't be a good idea. But if employees aren't paid well, great performers will find it hard to stay.

Offer and encourage constructive criticism and advice. Appreciate the hard work done and then discuss the area of improvement(s).

Stay productive and on-topic while providing feedback, and provide clear steps for improvement.
