In July 2024, the United States Supreme Court decided on the Trump V. United States case. It ruled, six to three, that all former and sitting Presidents and vice Presidents are immune from criminal prosecution and criminal law when making an ‘official executive action’. The main opinion of the approving six justices decision was emphasizing protecting executive independence and effective governance while excluding immunity for unofficial conduct. That effectively means that the president can do whatever they please even if it is a crime, as long as they label it an official executive action.
