I finished my master’s degree at the beginning of 2021. Back then, the world was in the thick of COVID. And instead of an auditorium filled with cheers and whispered congratulations, I discussed my thesis over a glitchy video call.They reduced my proudest academic moment to a handful of awkward Google Meet windows and a patchy internet connection. And it was so surreal and impersonal that I thought it didn’t count.

My Biggest Goal Yet

So, what’s next?We ask this question every time we reach a big goal. Once the hype dies, the goal seems to go with it. You spend so much time trying to achieve that goal that you don’t think about any other goals.After my graduation, I didn’t have any post-graduation goals. But that little celebration made me realize I should reflect on my journey and go from there.What did I learn? What were my biggest struggles? And what was my next big goal?

3. Reflect, Refine, and Repeat

Before that online graduation, I was so buried in papers and deadlines that I almost forgot why I was pursuing a master’s degree.I worked for free in a company only to write my research thesis. I started a few weeks before my first full-time job, and my professor tortured me until I wrote the perfect thesis.I’d power through a thousand tasks every few weeks but never paused to look at how far I’d come. And I missed those tiny check-ins to see what went right, what went wrong, and what needed adjusting.

I had already started a new job, so I was ready to close my laptop, call it a day, and move on with my day as if it was nothing special. But then, my parents and girlfriend orchestrated a mini-graduation ceremony at home. They bought a banner, and some confetti, and clapped embarrassingly loud during the proclamation. They reminded me that every goal deserves recognition. And I’m glad they did it.

I might have let this milestone slip into the background. But that small celebration refueled me.
