Big goals are like shiny toys — they’re exciting until you realize they are hard to achieve. And unlike IKEA furniture, your life goals don’t come with an instruction manual. I learned this after setting my first marathon goal (<a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/how-to-set-a-misogi">the one with the cheese</a>).I thought determination alone would make me achieve anything. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

Exciting Goals

About six weeks into training, I realized I had no idea what I was doing. My plan was a calendar scribbled with random runs and vague hopes that I wouldn’t keel over at the last kilometer. And it wasn’t until I started breaking the goal into smaller, actionable steps that everything clicked. Unfortunately, that was too late.Big goals can feel overwhelming, but they don’t have to paralyze you. You can break them down into bite-sized pieces you can easily tackle with the right system. I will give you the exact steps to achieve that in this article.

[The Challenge] - Your Best Year Yet

A few years ago, I set a goal to get healthier. I think anybody has done it at least once in their life. Except I had no idea what healthier even looked like. Was it eating more kale? Was it running a 5K? Or maybe it was drinking water instead of coffee?By February, my goal was to gather dust next to my unused yoga mat. And it wasn’t until I got specific — setting a goal to run 10K by June — that I started seeing progress.

1 — Get Crystal Clear on the Goal

A fuzzy goal is an impossible goal. As James Clear wrote in Atomic Habits :You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.And you can’t build a system around something vague like getting healthy or being happier.

Why It Matters

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Write your goal in one specific sentence. For example, run a 10K by June 1st or lose 15 pounds by eating whole foods 80% of the time.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Add a purpose. Why does this matter to you? You have to find your fuel when motivation wanes.</li></ul>

The Challenge

I treated my first massive goal like a sprint instead of a marathon. I wanted to learn to speak Spanish fluently in six months. I dove in, downloaded every language app, and studied for hours daily.Three weeks later, I was burned out and could barely remember anything. My dream felt too big to handle. But the real problem was that I hadn’t broken it into manageable pieces.

2 — Chunk It Down into Milestones

A big goal is like eating an entire cake in one bite. You need slices.Breaking your goal into milestones makes it manageable and provides opportunities to celebrate progress.

Divide your goal into 3–5 milestones. For example:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">For writing a book, milestones could be:</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Outline your chapters.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Write the first draft of 3 chapters.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Finish the entire first draft.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Edit the first draft.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Write the second/final draft.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Save $2,500 by March.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Save $5,000 by June.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Save $7,500 by September.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Save $10,000 by the end of December.</li></ol>

Let’s get back to the cheese marathon fail. When training, I learned the power of weekly tasks the hard way.One Sunday, I stared at my training plan and realized I’d skipped the entire week. But it wasn’t because I lacked motivation (maybe a little). It was because my plan was too vague. I wrote “train for the marathon five days a week" on my calendar. Yet, I hadn’t broken it into specific runs or gym sessions. I didn’t have any weekly goals or achievements. Therefore, training felt useless.

3 — Create Actionable Weekly Tasks

In Getting Things Done , David Allen wrote:You can’t do a project. You can only do action steps.Weekly tasks keep you grounded in what you can do today.

For each milestone, list specific tasks you can accomplish weekly. For example:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">For running a 10K, a weekly task might be "run three 5K training sessions".</li><li class="ql-align-justify">For writing a book, the weekly task might be "write 4,000 words this week".</li></ul>Use a planner or digital app like Notion or Trello to keep track of your weekly tasks. (By the way, I am a Notion affiliate. Use this link if you want to help the newsletter).

I usually share everything that is on my mind with my friends. But this behavior could backfire.Sharing your challenges and ideas with your closest ones is useful. But when it becomes a habit, and you keep failing, they won’t trust you anymore. They will stop supporting you. I want you to take a different approach in 2025. You must build an efficient support system.Do you want to run?Recruit a training buddy, join a local running group, or post updates on social media. You will notice a different kind of involvement from those people because they will be actively interested in your progress.

4 — Build a Support System

Even the most self-motivated people benefit from accountability. According to a study by Dr. Gail Matthews, people are 65% more likely to achieve their goals if they share them with a friend or mentor.

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Find an accountability partner or group. Share your milestones and weekly tasks with them.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Use social media (if it’s not anxiety-inducing for you) to publicly share your progress. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Reward yourself for hitting milestones. However, prioritize fun instead of derailing rewards.</li></ul>

During my marathon training, I discovered a key obstacle — bad weather.Winter rains were relentless. My usual outdoor runs became impossible. And I would have fallen off track without a backup plan.Instead, I started using the treadmill at the gym. It was less exciting but equally effective. Yet, planning saved my goal.

5 — Plan for Obstacles

Real life can be savage, and no plan could survive it.Obstacles are inevitable. But you can increase your chances of staying on track if you prepare. You won’t solve every problem — that’s impossible. But at least you will try to protect yourself from the most common issues.

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">List potential challenges or <a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/how-to-make-a-how-to-fail-list">build a how-to-fail list </a>. For example, if your dream is fitness-related, your obstacles might include bad weather or a busy work schedule.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Brainstorm solutions. For bad weather, you could plan indoor workouts. For time crunches, try morning workouts or lunch-hour walks.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Revisit your plan monthly to adjust for life’s curveballs. </li></ul>

I wasn’t only proud of the race when I crossed the finish line of that marathon. I was proud of the months of consistent progress I’d made along the way. Tracking each week’s achievement, no matter how small, reminded me of how far I’d come and kept me pushing forward. Even if it didn't last, I had a blast.

6 — Track Progress and Reflect on Weekly

Tracked goals are easier to manage. Tracking your progress keeps you motivated and moves you in the right direction.

<ol><li>Set a weekly check-in and ask yourself:</li></ol><ul><li>What did I accomplish this week?</li><li>What challenges did I face?</li><li>How can I adjust next week to do better?</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Use visual trackers like habit charts or progress bars. There’s something deeply satisfying about coloring in a box or moving a slider closer to completion. You have many infographics you can download and use from The Challenge (including this issue).</li></ol>

Your goal doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Whether it is your Misogi or any other big goal, you can break it down into smaller steps. If you do, you will make it manageable and inevitable.It sounds great, but I don’t know where to start, you might think.Don’t worry. In these past years, I learned you must chase opportunities to make them happen. This could be your deliberate way of finding opportunities.

Most people would hear about Misogi and set a random goal that doesn’t represent them or serve them any purpose. So, before you can set a Misogi, you must figure out where it will make the biggest impact. You can use the wheel of life for that (if you’re new to this tool, check out <a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/build-your-wheel-of-life">the dedicated article </a>for a breakdown).

1 — Start with Your Wheel of Life (1)

Look at the areas of your life:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">What are my worst flaws?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Where am I most dissatisfied?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Which area, if transformed, would create a ripple effect across my entire life?</li></ul>The cheese marathon idea came from my Physical wheel. I have never had a great relationship with my body. I wanted to get fit. And running a marathon that would reward me with my favorite food seemed like a great idea.Your Misogi might focus on a completely different area. If your relationships feel stagnant, you may want to build a new hobby to get to know more people or organize a group trip to an exotic country, for example.

1 — Start with Your Wheel of Life (2)

A good Misogi meets two criteria:<ol><li class="ql-align-justify">It’s Bold Enough to Scare You: If it doesn’t make you nervous, it’s not big enough.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">It’s Meaningful: The goal should resonate deeply with your values and what you want for your life.</li></ol>

Step 2 — Crafting Your Misogi (1)

Here are examples of Misogi goals inspired by different wheel-of-life categories:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Physical : Complete a marathon or triathlon.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Mental : Learn a new language.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Spiritual : Spend a weekend in silent meditation or create a daily gratitude practice.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Love : Plan and execute a grand romantic gesture.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Family : Record your family’s oral history through interviews.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Friends : Host a reunion for your high school or college crew. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Purpose : Launch a side project or write the first draft of a book. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Finance : Save 20% of your income and use it for a dream vacation. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Growth : Enroll in a public speaking course. </li></ul>

You have chosen your Misogi. For example, if your Misogi is running a marathon, your milestones might include signing up for the race, completing a 5K, and gradually increasing your mileage.</li></ol>

Step 3 — Make It Official

Misogi is not just about the goal — it’s about the journey. The path will challenge, stretch, and sometimes even frustrate you. But that’s the point. Growth happens when we are under pressure.Here are some tips for staying on track:<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Visual Reminders : Incorporate your Misogi into your vision board. Seeing it every day will keep you motivated.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Journal the Process : Reflect on your progress, challenges, and victories. This helps you stay connected to your purpose.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Celebrate Progress : The goal isn’t to be perfect but to grow. Celebrate every step forward, even if the path isn’t linear.</li></ul>

At the end of 2025, you should be able to look back and say: That was the year I [insert here your Misogi in past tense]. Maybe you ran a marathon. Or you may have learned to salsa dance or repaired a fractured friendship. But remember that Misogi is not only a goal — it’s a story. A few years ago, I had a brilliant New Year’s resolution: I was going to become a morning person. You know, the kind who wakes up before sunrise, drinks a green smoothie and writes three pages of a journal.January was great. I was waking up at 6 a.m. I was having healthy breakfasts. And I wrote a journal for a while. But in a few weeks, the journaling habit stopped. I started to crave more sugary breakfasts. The wheel of life is a visual representation of the key areas of your life: Physical, Mental, Spiritual, Love, Family, Friends, Purpose, Finance, and Growth.Imagine each area as a spoke in a wheel. The wheel can’t roll if one is too short. A balanced wheel means a smoother ride. So, if you neglect one area, the journey feels bumpy.

1 — Fill Your Wheel of Life (1)

As you can see above, I’ve written about this concept before. But here’s a quick refresher on the nine categories of the wheel.<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Physical : Your health and fitness.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Mental : Your emotional well-being.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Spiritual : Your sense of connection, whether through faith, mindfulness, or something else.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Love : Your romantic relationships.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Family : Your connections with relatives.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Friends : The bonds that give you a sense of belonging.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Purpose : Your career or mission in life.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Finance : Your financial health and stability.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Growth : Your personal development. </li></ul>The first step is to assess where you are right now.

1 — Fill Your Wheel of Life (2)

Where are you thriving? Where do you feel stuck? This snapshot will help you see where to focus your energy in 2025.<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Assess Each Area : Rate each area on a scale of 1 to 10. </li></ul><ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Identify the Gaps : Look for areas where you feel stuck or neglected. This year, my biggest gaps were in health and mental health, two things I rarely prioritized.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Visualize Balance : Imagine what a balanced wheel would look like for you. It doesn’t mean every area scores a perfect 10, but each one should feel cared for. </li></ol>

How to Fill the Wheel of Life

Once you’ve assessed your wheel of life, it’s time to create specific goals for each area. These don’t have to be monumental. But they should align with what you want. Here are a few ideas for inspiration (you can find more in the related article) :

2 — Craft New Goals for Each Area

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Physical :</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Train for a 10K run.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Try a new fitness class (yoga, kickboxing, etc.).</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Build a consistent sleep routine.</li></ol><ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Mental :</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Read 12 books (one per month).</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Start journaling for 10 minutes a day.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Practice gratitude by listing three things daily.</li></ol><ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Spiritual :</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Meditate for 10 minutes every morning.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Explore a new spiritual or philosophical practice.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Spend time in nature weekly.</li></ol>

Physical, Mental & Spiritual Goals

<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Love :</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Plan one meaningful date night per week.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Practice active listening in conversations.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Write a love letter to your partner every month.</li></ol><ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Family :</li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Schedule monthly get-togethers with extended family.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Call a relative once a week.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Start a family tradition, like Sunday dinners.</li></ol><ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Friends : </li></ul><ol><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Reconnect with a friend you’ve lost touch with.</li><li class="ql-indent-1 ql-align-justify">Plan a group trip or outing.</li><li class="ql-align-justify ql-indent-1">Make time for regular one-on-one meetups.</li></ol>

And don’t worry — it’s not about perfection or crossing off every item on your to-do list. It’s about prioritizing what matters and letting go of what doesn’t.

Let’s talk about the impact of unfinished business.Loose ends have a measurable effect on your mental health and productivity beyond the nagging feeling that you’ve forgotten something.

Why Closing Loose Ends Matters

Unfinished tasks are one of the top five causes of workplace anxiety , according to the American Institute of Stress (2022). And the mental burden of carrying unresolved items — even small ones — adds to overall stress levels.

Incomplete tasks lodge in your memory more persistently than complete ones. Psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik identified a phenomenon that creates mental open tabs that drain cognitive energy.

b. The Zeigarnik Effect

Princeton Neuroscience Institute found that physical clutter can compete for your attention and reduce your ability to focus. When your environment is chaotic, your mind struggles to stay clear.

c. The Clutter and Mental Overload

Lingering obligations can distract you from pursuing new opportunities. And this may be the most important effect of loose ends. In 2019, a study found that 76% of people felt they couldn’t focus on new goals because they were preoccupied with old ones .So closing ends isn’t only an exercise to feel good. It’s a practical, evidence-based strategy for reducing stress and maximizing your potential.Let’s see how you can do it fast.

Before closing your loose ends, you need to know what they are.Think of it as your mental audit . Set aside 30 minutes in a quiet space (the same as the <a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/the-year-that-was-a-reflective-guide">previous issue</a>). Grab a pen and paper (or the infographic below), and start listing.

1 — Start With a Mental Inventory (1)

To help you job your memory, think in categories.<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">Tasks: Projects you started but never finished. Bills you meant to pay. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Relationships: Conversations you avoided. Apologies you need to make. Messages you promised to send but didn’t.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Physical Spaces: A cluttered closet. A chaotic junk drawer. </li><li class="ql-align-justify">Habits or Promises to Yourself: Goals you set but didn’t follow through on. </li></ul>Don’t censor yourself. This exercise is not meant to judge what you should or shouldn’t do. It’s about discovering what is in your mind. You might not even be aware of some of the recursive thoughts that will come up.

1 — Start With a Mental Inventory (2)

Now that you have a list (the most important thing for us personal growth geeks) , it’s time to get ruthless.Not every loose end needs to be tied up. And holding onto unnecessary commitments is one of the biggest barriers to starting fresh. Ask yourself three questions for each item:<ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Does this truly matter to me, or am I holding onto it out of guilt or obligation?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Will completing this add value to my life, or is it just busy work?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Is this task aligned with my goals for the future?</li></ol>

2 — Let Go of What No Longer Serves You (1)

I had a half-finished fantasy book project on my Google Drive and told myself I’d finish it someday. But I’d lost interest in it entirely, and keeping it around only made me feel guilty when I opened its folder.Letting it go was liberating. And I don’t mean deleting it. Putting it in a safe place where you don’t always see it is enough.Sometimes, letting go feels hard. So you can reframe those decisions to prioritize what matters most. It doesn’t have to mean you are quitting forever. You are choosing to leave for now.

2 — Let Go of What No Longer Serves You (2)

People try to finish everything at once, but it always leads to overwhelm and procrastination. So, create a plan to tackle each task and commitment you decide to keep. A one-at-a-time approach works best. <ol><li class="ql-align-justify">Start Small : Begin with the easiest task on your list. Research shows that completing small tasks first creates momentum (I’ve talked about that <a href="https://cosmopolitanmindset.substack.com/p/deep-work-and-flow">here</a>.)</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Set Deadlines : Set a realistic deadline for each task. Be specific. Don’t write things like I’ll do it next week.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">Use the 2-Minute Rule : If a task can be done in two minutes or less, do it immediately. </li></ol>

3 — Break Down One Loose End at a Time (1)

Last year, one of my lingering tasks was organizing my email. I mixed my private and work life at the same address. I didn’t set up any rules to split my tax notifications, job offers, and readers wanting to interact. And many times, I lost a few important opportunities because of that.It took me 30 minutes to fix everything. I split my emails into five different folders. I have one for taxes and subscriptions, one for work, one for personal growth feeds, emails from my subscribers, and general topics. And until then, I’ve never missed an email ever again.

3 — Break Down One Loose End at a Time (2)

Conversations are some of the heaviest loose ends.Unresolved conflicts or unspoken words can weigh on you far more than a messy desk. And the end of the year is the perfect moment to release that pressure.Consider whether it’s time to address lingering tensions with someone. This doesn’t mean jumping into a confrontation. Sometimes, you can search for closure from within — writing a letter you never send or acknowledging your feelings and letting them go.Other times, you will have to take action.

4 — Create Closure in Relationships (1)

Last year, I realized I hadn’t spoken with a friend for months. Reaching out felt scary because I didn’t know if I did anything to make them angry at me. But when I did, it lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. And it turns out he thought the same things about me.It was the perfect moment to reconnect. We have solved our conflicts, and now we often hang out. But our paths may have split forever if I hadn't reached out.

4 — Create Closure in Relationships (2)

Don’t forget to celebrate your progress.Every loose end you close is a victory. Here’s an idea to help you achieve more: the completion jar. Write each of the loose ends you have to complete on different pieces of paper. Each of them will have a task and a deadline. Whenever you finish a task, throw it into a jar. And at the end, read through your notes and reflect on how far you’ve come.<ul><li class="ql-align-justify">(SAFE VERSION) Write a reward on the jar and collect it only once you finish all the tasks.</li><li class="ql-align-justify">(UNSAFE VERSION) Once you’re done reading, set the jar on fire. I did it last year, and it felt liberating. </li></ul>

Closing ends isn’t just about decluttering your life. It was a cold December evening two years ago. I was sitting in my favorite corner of the living room, staring at the blank page of my daily journal. The year was coming to a close, and I had that sinking feeling I’d been carrying for a week — the gnawing sense that I’d missed the mark yet again.I hadn’t finished the book I planned to write. I hadn’t started going to the gym as I promised since spring. And worst of all, I couldn’t even remember half the goals I’d set for myself at the start of the year. I took a deep breath. I stopped blaming myself. And I began asking questions instead.

Don’t write generic sentences like I got healthier . Note the actions behind it: I started walking 20 minutes every morning and felt more energized.As you write, take time to savor each memory. These wins are proof that you’re capable of growth. It doesn’t matter how small they seem. They are a reminder that progress isn’t always loud or flashy. On the contrary, it can happen quietly, one small step at a time.

Once you finish celebrating your wins, it’s time to think about learning. This is where you turn to the areas where you struggled — not to criticize yourself, but to uncover what they can teach you.This part of the process is always humbling for me. Two years ago, I set a goal to launch a side project by summer but never got past the brainstorming phase. At first, I blamed a lack of time. But when I dug deeper, I realized the problem — I’d been afraid to put my ideas into the world.Last year, this project became The Challenge.

So, step back and look for patterns.For example, did you notice that you tend to procrastinate on a specific task? Or did you notice that your best achievements came when you worked with a partner or mentor?

Ask Yourself: <ul><li class="ql-align-justify">What worked well, and why?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">What didn’t work, and what can I do differently?</li><li class="ql-align-justify">What habits, routines, or mindsets help or hinder me?</li></ul>Last year, I realized that my most productive months were when I stuck to a morning routine.It wasn’t anything elaborate — 30 minutes of writing followed by a quick run — but it set the tone for my day. And that insight became the foundation for a habit I still rely on today.

The final step of your review is the most liberating: deciding what to let go. Think of it like cleaning out your closet. You are not only making space for the new. You are freeing yourself from the weight of things that no longer serve you.
