"21st century art challenges: what makes us human?"

Narciss is an art installation that investigates what might happen if a machine were to exhibit human-like narcissism.The project was inspired by the concept of self-awareness, which has historically been considered unique to the human condition.

The installation design was intentionally stripped back so that the object itself would speak with minimal interference.The team wanted to avoid decorating the machine and instead present it in its most basic, "naked" form.

As the AI observes itself in the mirror, it generates descriptions like "a shadow of a person" and "a bunch of electronics on a table." These descriptions are both accurate and eerie, reminding the team of how humans think about themselves.

To create a sense of grandiosity, the team filmed Narciss in a marble colosseum.This location was chosen to evoke a heavy, mockumentary feel, emphasizing the importance of the self in the context of the project.

Before using a mirror in Narciss, the team experimented with AI-generated art and Rorschach TestsHowever, they did not feel these approaches made a significant poetic contribution, and ultimately decided on the mirror as the focal point of the installation.

The AI for Good Global Summit hosted an event called "AI Pushing the Limits of Artistic Intelligence," showcasing the collaboration between human artists and artificial intelligence. One notable performance featured human beatboxer Reeps One in a "battle" with an AI-powered music generator trained on his own beats.The event was held at May 28–31, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.

AI Beatbox Battle vs Human?

Reeps One is an award-winning visual and vocal artist, known for mimicking digital beatboxes using his voice.He is an artist in residence at Nokia Bell Labs, experimenting with voice and machine learning technology.

Who is the Artist?

Reeps One and programmer CJ Carr developed a deep learning music system, 'Second Self', trained on his beats and voice sounds.The AI-powered system can replicate and predict Reeps One's musical compositions.

What did they developed?

Reeps One recorded his beats in Nokia Bell Labs Anechoic Chamber, one of the world's quietest rooms, where he generated 140 variations of a kick drum sound.Reeps One performed against the AI-powered beatboxer at the AI for Good Global Summit 2019, accompanied by dancer Robozee.
