The iPhone 13 has been out for 6 months, is it still worth buying or is it better to wait for the upcoming iPhone 14?

iPhone 13 - 6 Months Later…

Battery life on the iPhone 13 has to be my favourite feature. I can get anywhere from 7-8 hours of screen-on time, a big step-up compared to the 4-6 hours on my iPhone X. This means the iPhone 13 can easily last a whole day and in days of lighter use can even last for two! Glad to report that battery life has been consistent over the past 6 months.

Battery

The iphone 13 brought some cool new camera features. Including cinematic mode and photographic styles. I use the camera everyday and while these new features are nice to have, I appreciate the camera quality upgrades the most. The wide angle lens is incredibly well stabilised, almost providing gimbal level of stability. It is also better in low light and the ultra-wide angle lens is noticeably sharper. This results in truly stunning photos and video!

Camera

The OLED display on the iPhone 13 is best in class. Text is rich in detail and colours are vibrant. Photos, videos, games all are a joy to see on this display! One display feature the iPhone 13 misses compared to the Pro model is 120hz, this faster refresh makes screen animation extra smooth. Nice to have but is by no means a must have. Compared to previous iPhones, the iPhone 13 has a smaller notch, a step in the right direction but I more look forward to the day the notch is removed. Overall, the display on the iPhone 13 is fantastic to use everyday!

Display

The iPhone 13 starts at $799. To save $100, you may be considering the iPhone 12. But my advice is to not do this. The iPhone 13 provides far superior battery life, double the storage and improved cameras, smaller notch etc. All of this for $100 is a no brainer! But what about the more expensive iPhone 13 pro? The 13 Pro has even better cameras, including a telephoto lens, that 120hz display and even more premium build quality. However for $200 more, I can’t justify the price difference. For most, including myself, I would go for the regular iPhone 13, it is the better value option!

The Lineup

At the end of the day the iPhone 13 is a safe upgrade. Apple didn’t take any risks with revolutionary new features or design, instead upgraded the areas that matter most, camera, display and battery and this creates for a really good phone. Now, in March, we are at the mid-point between the iPhone 13’s release and the launch of the iPhone 14. Should you wait? You can always wait for the next model but my advice is if you need an upgrade the iPhone 13 is a solid phone that delivers in all the areas that matter most and will last or many years to come and the iPhone 14 won’t change that!

Today I will share my experience using the iPhone 13 as my main phone, everyday for the past 6 months. As well as taking a look at how the iPhone 13 compares to rest of the iPhone line up. The iPhone 13 features aluminium and glass construction that has help up very well. No scratches on the glass back. The frame has mostly held up well. Over the years iPhone screens have become more crack resistant but have also become prone to scratching, I have a screen protector on my screen and recommend you do too. I am happy with the durability of the iPhone 13. Use of high quality build materials create a phone that feels solid in the hand. The iPhone 13 didn’t launch with any revolutionary features. Instead made improvements in the three most important elements. Display, battery and camera. The OLED display is best in class. Brighter compared to iPhone 12. Colours are vibrant. Photos, videos, games all are a joy to see on this display! One display feature the iPhone 13 misses compared to the iPhone 13 Pro is 120hz. I have a 120hz display on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro, this faster refresh makes screen animation extra smooth. Nice to have but not a must have feature. Compared to previous iPhones, the iPhone 13 features a 20% smaller notch. The smaller notch doesn’t impact how I use my phone. Overall, the display on the iPhone 13 is a joy to use! This bring me to battery, my favourite feature of the iPhone 13. As a power user, I am on my phone a lot. With iPhone 13 I get 7-8 hrs of screen time. Over the past 6 months, battery performance has remained consistent, I still have 100% battery health remaining. Let’s talk cameras, the dual lens camera system is truly impressive. Photos are true to life. White balance is spot on. Colours are vibrant. Images are sharp and retain detail. Regardless of lighting skin tones are accurate. As for video, the wide lens uses sensor shift technology to provide almost gimbal level of stability. Dynamic range is excellent. I have even used 4K 60fps footage shot on my iPhone 13 in my YouTube videos. The iPhone 13 starts at $799. I wear my Apple Watch daily and can’t imagine a day without it! Why? Apple advertise the more exciting features, such as being able to measure blood oxygen levels or altitude during a mountain hike. Very impressive but these are not features most use regularly. So instead here are my top 5 underrated Apple Watch features that I use daily. Available on all current Apple Watch models, these are the features that make the Apple Watch worth having for me and are the features I am sure you will enjoy having too!

Why You Should Buy An Apple Watch ⌚️

Receiving notifications right on my Apple Watch is fantastic. Allowing me to see my important notifications without having to reach for my phone. Now I did say important notifications, this is key. If you let all notifications come in to your watch it may get a bit much. Instead, go through your settings and manually select which notifications you want coming in. For example I only allow calls and messaging apps. That way I know when my watch goes off, it is important!

Get Notified

Apple provides a level of cross-device integration like no other. With my Apple Watch I can unlock my iPhone using FaceID while wearing a mask. I can also adjust the volume of my Airpods using the digital crown while listening to music on the train. Oh yeah and I can ping my phone with one tap if I loose it at home, a feature I use more often than I like to admit ;) Siri is great too. Quickly create reminders, control my lights and get the temperature before leaving home.

The Ecosystem

Support for Apple Pay will vary from country to country. Living in London, I use Apple Pay multiple times every day. To tap in and pay for public transport, buy my morning coffee, then later in the evening for groceries. All only requiring a simple tap with the wrist to pay. Easy!

Maps too is great on the Apple Watch. Let’s say I have an email with an address that I need to get to, I open it up on my iPhone, then choose my route and start directions. This then automatically carries over to my apple watch for turn by turn directions. Perfect when walking or biking not having to take your phone out of your pocket, instead just look at your wrist to see which turn to take next.

Turn Left Or Right?

Lastly, activity rings. As a very objective oriented person, I find it so satisfying to complete these rings. Essentially it is 3 rings, for stand, exercise and move, which gradually fill up throughout the day ensuring I get at least moderate levels of exercise each day!

A pair of open-ear bone conduction headphones, that will allow you to listen to music while still being able to clearly hear your surroundings at the same time. In this video I will go over the unboxing, design, features, sound and finally answer the question of who these are for. What stood out to me is how light they are coming in at just 26 grams. The Aeropex’s are also very flexible and have this grippy rubber silicone texture that feels well built. IP67 Waterproof, don’t have to worry about sweat or rain, thought I would not go swimming with these. I have the blue version, also come in black, red and grey. And comes in two sizes, mini and standard. Tour around the Aeropex. On the bottom right side: magnetic charging port. The built-in battery lasts 8 hours, which I found to hold up in my testing. Next to that are on-board power and volume buttons. On the left side a multifunction button to pause/play music. Also two mic’s for calls. In testing I found these to perform well, calls are clear and also loud enough to hear outside. Right off the bat, feel very comfortable, hard to notice on your head. As someone who wears glasses at first I was worried but in reality this is not an issue at all. They sit over my glasses frame. The clamping pressure is minimal. Far less compared to any on or over ear headphones. At the same time, they grip really well. They have never fallen of or moved on my head, even during workouts. I have no complaints about the fit. It is cool to be able to hear your music while having nothing in or covering your ears. While still being able to hear your surrounds completely unobstructed and also people around you don’t hear your music. The Aeropex’s features Aftershockz 8th generation bone conduction technology so are refined. Considering the Aeropex’s generate sound in a completely different way compared to regular pair of headphones, I was surprised by the sound quality. Don’t get me wrong, for most these won’t replace your everyday pair of headphones. But the Aeropex’s are clear and get plenty loud. When listing to music I did find myself wishing for more bass. The bass is there but doesn’t carry the same thump a pair of in ear earbuds would, Higher frequencies are present but can be a bit harsh. Noticeable when listing at higher volumes when working out. Then it comes to mids, the Aeropex’s perform very well. Mids are clean and show good separation from the highs and lows. This makes the music audible and clear. I also tried some podcasts and watching a few videos. This again is an area where the Aeropex’s shine. Voices are clear and life like. Who are they for? First, the Aeropex’s are the ideal solution for anyone who does outdoor workouts, running or biking. I also started using them while working. If you work in a collaborative environment, the Aeropex’s are definitely something to consider. This is a unique product, while the sound is not perfect, Aftershockz are on to something and for the right person the Aeropex’s are worth buying. Next to that are on-board power and volume buttons. On the left side a multifunction button to pause/play music. Also two mic’s for calls. In testing I found these to perform well, calls are clear and also loud enough to hear outside. Right off the bat, feel very comfortable, hard to notice on your head. As someone who wears glasses at first I was worried but in reality this is not an issue at all. They sit over my glasses frame. The clamping pressure is minimal. Far less compared to any on or over ear headphones. At the same time, they grip really well. They have never fallen of or moved on my head, even during workouts. I have no complaints about the fit. It is cool to be able to hear your music while having nothing in or covering your ears. While still being able to hear your surrounds completely unobstructed and also people around you don’t hear your music. The Aeropex’s features Aftershockz 8th generation bone conduction technology so are refined. Considering the Aeropex’s generate sound in a completely different way compared to regular pair of headphones, I was surprised by the sound quality. Don’t get me wrong, for most these won’t replace your everyday pair of headphones. But the Aeropex’s are clear and get plenty loud. When listing to music I did find myself wishing for more bass. The bass is there but doesn’t carry the same thump a pair of in ear earbuds would, Higher frequencies are present but can be a bit harsh. Noticeable when listing at higher volumes when working out. Then it comes to mids, the Aeropex’s perform very well. Mids are clean and show good separation from the highs and lows. This makes the music audible and clear. I also tried some podcasts and watching a few videos. This again is an area where the Aeropex’s shine. Voices are clear and life like. Who are they for? First, the Aeropex’s are the ideal solution for anyone who does outdoor workouts, running or biking. I also started using them while working. If you work in a collaborative environment, the Aeropex’s are definitely something to consider. This is a unique product, while the sound is not perfect, Aftershockz are on to something and for the right person the Aeropex’s are worth buying.

Round design that is 3.3” tall with mesh fabric going all the way around. Cool touch surface on the top for media and Siri controls. Has a range of colourful LEDs communicate. I like the small unobtrusive design. It will fit in in any space, living room, kitchen, bedroom. Especially the white version up against a white wall, helping blend in. Let’s talk about what makes this smart speaker smart. Over time Siri has gotten more capable and being able to ask questions by simply saying the two word command to activate her is super easy. I have my HomePod mini setup in the kitchen and while cooking I use it to set a timer for the pasta, convert how many ML in a cup, or set a reminder to buy more pasta because I cooked it all. You can also use Siri to read you the morning news, look up a recipe online, send a message or even start a call. Also if you have multiple of these around the home you can use a feature called intercom to send an audio message to all HomePod mini’s in the home. Integrates with your other smart home accessories, such as lights, blinds, door locks etc. All of which can be controlled with the HomePod mini. If you have an Apple Music subscription or have a library of music in the music app like I do. You can ask Siri to play a specific song, music of an artist or even a genre. A feature I especially like is the ability to pull up a song on your iPhone and hold it close to the HomePod mini to instantly send it over and start playing on the HomePod mini. This is the kind of integration that Apple does like no other. Do bear in mind, this particular feature will only work with the iPhone 11 or newer. Importantly, in addition to this the HomePod mini can also be used as an audio output on any of your apple decides, whether it be you Mac or iPad, simply select it from the drop down menu. Letting you stream any audio, such as a YouTube video or Netflix show or music from Spotify. Ok but just as important as it’s smart features is the sound quality. Compared to other mini smart speakers like the Google Nest Mini or Amazon’s Echo dot. What set’s the HomePod mini apart most is the sound. Despite it small size, it can comfortably fill a small to medium size room. The V shaped EQ emphasises the highs and lows to give a vibrant sound profile that is a joy to listen to. 360 degree sound gives constant sound regardless from which angle you are facing Like with any speaker, I suggest placing it in the corner of a room for best results, especially in terms of bass. Speaking of which Apple’s force‑cancelling passive radiators give HomePod mini a surprisingly deep and full bass. Highs are crystal clear, making voices sound natural. Mids are preset and balanced with zero distortion. Really impressive sound for such a small design. To take this even further you can pair two HomePod Minis to get a proper stereo sound with distinct left and right channels. Who is it for and is it worth it? HomePod mini is impressive, but to really take advantage of it’s smart features and in my opinion to justify the price, you need to have at least an iPhone. Much like the Apple Watch and Airpods, the HomePod mini is really meant for those who are already in the Apple ecosystem. And if you are, the HomePod mini offers an unmatched level of integration with Siri and your smart home devices all while offering exceptional sound, in a premium design that will feel at home in any room.
