23 Ways to Make 2023 Your Miracle Year

2023 is officially upon us. Will it be your Annus Mirabilis?To get you started, here are 23 actionable ideas to help you crush the year ahead—segmented into work, health, money, and personal categories.Action Note: To avoid overwhelm, simply pick ONE from each category and get started this week. Execute on those simple actions for a month before picking another one. Continue that process during the year. If you do that, I strongly suspect 2023 will be your best year ever.

This Year is not the same

To identify what to prioritize and what to attempt to delegate or delete from your days, use my Energy Calendar Technique.<ul><li>For one week, at the end of every weekday, go through and color-code your calendar from the day. Green for Energy Creating, Yellow for Neutral, and Red for Energy Draining. At the end of the week, look at your calendar and assess the trends: What are the common energy creating, neutral, and energy draining activities? Energy creating should be prioritized, while energy neutral and energy draining should be delegated or deleted over time.</li></ul>

Work Actions

Go into your calendar and add at least two 15-minute blocks for absolutely nothing. During these windows, don't check email or get anything done. Go for a walk, read something non-work related, sit and stare into space, whatever. Prioritize and protect these short bouts of rest as a key part of your daily systems, not a reward for your efforts. Growth requires this balance.

Schedule rest or free time into your day

These windows should become sacred windows of progress on the important long-term tasks (not the urgent short-term ones). If you are like me, you might need a forcing function to shut everything down, so use an app like Flow to force the issue.

Build a deep work practice by blocking 60-minute windows during which you have zero email, messaging, apps, or distractions.

The simplest way to action this is to default to 25-minute calls/meetings (instead of 30 minutes) and take a simple walking or breathing break during the 5 minutes. Most calls/meetings have 5 minutes of wasted time on pleasantries (or terrible talk about the weather...), so just cut that and get straight to the point. Everyone is better off for having the breaks.

Reduce the impact of attention residue by taking breaks

With Spaced Repetition, information is consumed at increasing intervals until it's committed to long-term memory. If you first consume some new information at 8am, you'd have Rep 1 at 9am (1 hr later), Rep 2 at 12pm (3 hrs later), Rep 3 at 6pm (6 hrs later), Rep 4 at 6am (12 hrs later), and so on. The memory is reinforced at increasing intervals. Your brain is a muscle—each repetition is a "flex" of that muscle. By steadily increasing the intervals between reps, you are pushing the muscle with a steadily more challenging load. You're forcing the retention muscle to grow.

Use the Spaced Repetition Technique to retain anything new that you learn

Learn the difference between urgent and important. Work towards delegating or deleting the unimportant tasks that are draining your time and mental energy. The goal is to spend more time on important tasks that further your long-term values, missions, goals, and principles.

Use an Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize your tasks

To feel energized as soon as you get out of bed, try using my 5-5-5-30 Method.When you wake up, do 5 push-ups, 5 squats, 5 lunges, and a 30-second plank. You can do it while you are brewing coffee or right when you get out of bed. It will jumpstart your metabolism and give you a boost of energy to start the day.

Health Actions

You don't need a fancy morning routine—just go for a walk. The sunlight, movement, and fresh air have a direct positive impact on your mood, circadian rhythm, metabolism, digestion, and more. Leave your phone at home (or put it on airplane mode). Let your creativity flow.

Go for a 15 minute tech-free walk every morning

PLP stands for Pull-ups, Lunges, Pushups. On Day 1, you do 10 reps of each, on Day 2, you do 11 reps of each, on Day 3, you do 12 reps of each, and so on, all the way up to 69 reps. The slow, steady accumulation of volume creates impressive progress (I've gotten leaner and more dense from doing it in the past). Make sure to take care of your soft tissue quality if you do the challenge—use a foam roller and massage your shoulders and lats to avoid injury. You can also add PLP to your normal workouts to layer in a challenging, growth-driving element.

11 minutes of weekly cold water immersion (showers or full immersion) has been shown to have a whole host of mental and physical health benefits. I have personally experienced this over the last year, and can honestly say that the 4-7 minutes of daily cold exposure has changed my life—an incredible energy boost and dopamine surge that lasts for several hours. Do one hard thing in the morning that makes everything else feel much easier.

Get cold every single day

Develop a simple Power Down Ritual to more effectively separate work from your personal life.A Power Down Ritual is a fixed set of actions and behaviors that mentally and physically mark the end of your professional day. An example of my fixed sequence might look something like this: Check email for any final requests requiring action, check calendar for the following day and complete 15 minutes of prep work for initial priority tasks of the following morning, update any task lists for progress and confirm open items for next day.

Personal Actions

As time passes in any relationship, it becomes easy to take the good for granted and focus on the stress or tensions. Don't fall into this trap. Highlight the good and watch the amazing impact it will have.

Tell your partner one thing you appreciate about them every single night

Figure out what role you need to play at different times and set alarms with labels that provide a nudge to "turn on" that character when that time hits. It's a simple behavioral intervention that can go a long way.

Set Character Alarms to get into character for a specific role or identity during the day

Do the new thing for 30 minutes per day for 30 straight days. 900 minutes of accumulated effort will yield surprisingly significant results. You can get started learning a new language, dramatically improve your physical fitness, pick up an instrument, or build a writing/reading practice.

Make progress on something new with my 30-for-30 Approach

Identify a topic, try to explain it to a 5-year-old, study to fill in knowledge gaps exposed by the explanation, and iterate on the process accordingly. Teaching is the most powerful form of learning. Progress to teaching as quickly as possible and you will cement your learnings and highlight the gaps that need to be filled.

Use the Feynman Technique for learning anything new

Create an automated direct deposit for a small amount of money into an investment account every month.Never look at the account. Don't pay any attention to it. A $100 monthly investment into the S&P 500 for the last 10 years would be worth ~$20,000 today. Let it compound.

Money Actions

When you have to think about these tasks every month, there is a small cognitive burden that reduces your capacity to focus on more important projects and opportunities. They are all easily automated (most of the services offer automated flows) and the digital systems tend to be accurate. Do quick accuracy checks once a quarter but avoid looking otherwise.

Automate all simple financial tasks such as paying bills, credit cards, and investing

Once you put something in your shopping cart, walk away from the computer and come back 48 hours later. If you still want it, buy it. Most of the time, you'll realize you don't need it. Invest that money instead and watch it compound.

And new studies suggest powerful strategies for anyone to build greater willpower – with huge benefits for your health, productivity and happiness.

The Mindset That Brings Unlimited Willpower

We all face demanding days that seem designed to test our self-control. Perhaps you are finishing an important project and you have to remain in quiet concentration, without letting your attention slip to other distractions. If you are on a diet, you might have spent the past few hours resisting the cookie jar while the sweet treats silently whisper “eat me”. In each case, you would have relied on your willpower, which psychologists define as the ability to avoid short-term temptations and override unwanted thoughts, feelings or impulses where some seem to have much greater reserves of it.

Defining Willpower

Until recently, the prevailing psychological theory proposed that willpower resembled a kind of battery. You might start the day with full strength, but each time you have to control your thoughts, feelings or behaviour, you zap that battery’s energy. Without the chance to rest and recharge, those resources run dangerously low, making it far harder to maintain your patience and concentration, and to resist temptation. Drawing on the Freudian term for the part of the mind that is responsible for reining in our impulses, the process was known as “ego depletion”.

People with the non-limited view on willpower did not show any signs of ego depletion: they showed no decline in their mental focus after performing a mentally taxing activity

In recent years, some scientists have debated the reliability of the laboratory tests of ego depletion, but Job has also shown that people’s willpower mindsets are linked to many real-life outcomes. She asked university students to complete twice-daily questionnaires about their activities over two non-consecutive weekly periods. As you might expect, some days had much higher demands than others, leading to feelings of exhaustion.

Most of the participants recovered to some degree overnight, but those with the non-limited mindsets actually experienced an increase in their productivity the following day, as if they had been energized by the extra pressure. Once again, it seemed that their belief that “mental stamina fuels itself” had become their reality.

If you already have the non-limited mindset about willpower, these findings might be a cause for self-satisfaction. But what can we do if we have been living under the assumption that our reserves of self-control are easily depleted? Studies suggest that simply learning about this cutting-edge science – through short, accessible texts – can help shift people’s beliefs, at least in the short term. Knowledge, it seems, is power; if so, simply reading this article might have already started to galvanize your mental stamina. You might even enhance this by telling others about what you have learnt.

Galvanizing your willpower

Researchers at Stanford University and the University of Pennsylvania recently designed a storybook to teach pre-schoolers the idea that exercising willpower can be energizing, rather than exhausting, and that self-control can grow the more we practice it. Children who had heard this story showed greater self-control in a test of “delayed gratification”, in which they were given the chance to forgo a small treat to receive a bigger treat later on, compared to their classmates who had heard another tale.

One useful strategy to change your mindset may be to remember a time when you worked on a mentally demanding task for the pure enjoyment of the activity. There might be a job at work, for example, that others appear to find difficult but you find satisfying. Or maybe it’s a hobby – such as learning a new piece on the piano – that demands intense concentration, yet feels effortless for you. A recent study found that engaging in this kind of recollection naturally shifts people’s beliefs to the non-limited mindset, as they see proof of their own mental stamina.

You mustn’t expect miracles immediately. But with perseverance, you should see your mindset changing, and with it a greater capacity to master your thoughts, feelings and behaviors so that your actions propel you towards your goals. Once you have proved to yourself that your willpower can grow, you may find it easier to then resist other kinds of temptation or distraction.

Many of us look back at the year that’s passed and think about the year ahead. While you can make changes at any time, the New Year is the best time to commit to leading your best life. Beginning of The Year is a Natural Time for Reflection

To encourage people to hit the core of their goals and values, Simon suggests taking time to write yourself a letter.“This is a letter that nobody else will see,” he says. “It’s not about resolutions; it’s about feelings and values, and it comes from your heart. Most people have probably never taken the opportunity to write a letter to themselves, but when you do it, magical things start to happen. You start to lead your life according to your own set of goals and wishes that that come from within.”

Take Time to Write Yourself a Letter.

Your letter should talk about the year you want to have ahead. Simon says the letter should answer five questions:<ul><li>What are the fears you plan to tackle, those things you believe are holding you back?</li><li>What are adventures you will embrace in the year to come?</li><li>How will you connect or reconnect with others in your life?</li><li>How will you plan to grow?</li><li>What can you do to serve others?</li></ul>

How to Write Your Letter

These are the key questions that seem to evoke the deepest reactions,” says Simon. “They are what bring up key issues. They’re not necessarily what you’re going to do in Q1 and Q2 for goals. It’s deep, internal, intimate value work.”

Once you write your letter, refer to it over the course of the year. Reading your letter over again will become a key motivator throughout the course of the year. Since it is personal to you, it will remind you what your key values and goals are.

Reviewing Your Letter

It really keeps you on track with what are the most important aspects of your life,” says Simon, who suggests keeping your letter nearby, such as in your nightstand. “Don’t be afraid to revise it. This is a living document.”

Regular Revisions

Be sure to review your letter at the end of the year before you write the one for the next year. “When you take a look at that letter after a year there is something really special about that moment,” says Simon. “You are talking directly to yourself, saying, ‘This is what I cared about a year ago. How did I do? Did I hit those values?’ I make reading it at the end of the year a big deal.”When you go through the process of reviewing it, look at where you hit the mark and where you don’t. Give yourself grace and the ability to be human. “Know that there are times when you will miss the mark"

View your letter as a gift. “Use it to push through and say ‘yes’ to something that may feel uncomfortable but that you feel is the right thing to do,” says Simon. “It can be an incredible upward spiral where one thing will lead to another, then all of a sudden you are leading your best life.”

How the four-day week evolved 

By the 1950s, however, there were calls from labour unions to introduce a four-day week. “People began projecting, if we take out another workday, it’d be even better,” says Harter. But take-up of the four-day workweek has remained slow: by March 2020, a Gallup study of more than 10,000 US full-time employees showed only 5% worked a shorter week.  L

There are different four-day workweek models: from cutting one workday, reducing working hours and being paid the same wage; to intense working hours, where five days’ worth of work is crammed into four longer shifts. The former set-up is generally the goal; achieved by a combination of the introduction of new tools and operating practices that boost efficiency and result in a rise in worker wellbeing that fuels productivity.

Some workers may resist having a compressed workweek, with potentially longer hours and fewer breaks, imposed on them by an employer. Others may already be working at full tilt, meaning a shorter workweek could make their workload less manageable. “There are some employees who’ll end up trying to cram more work into four days where they previously had greater flexibility to work across five days,” says Harter. “If you get to Thursday afternoon, still haven't finished your work and everyone else has gone home, that can create stress and resentment.”
