It's widely believed that our standard playing cards, used in various games including high-stakes poker, originated from the Tarot. Both decks feature four suits with ten numbered cards each. In the Tarot, each suit also has King, Queen, Jack, and Knight cards. 
The 'Knight' has disappeared from modern decks, although examples are found in the fossil record. The modern 'Jack' is a descendant of the Tarot 'Page' cards. Despite striking similarities, few explore using Gin Rummy cards for divination.

The Evolution of Playing Cards from Tarot

The modern Jack is a survival of the Page cards in the Tarot. (See examples of Tarot court cards here from the 1910 Rider-Waite deck.) The similarities between the two types of decks are significant, yet no one but adepts seems to consider using their Gin Rummy cards to tell the future.
The eminent psychiatrist Carl Jung, however, might have done so.

Carl Jung and the Tarot Connection

As <a href="https://marykgreer.com/2008/03/31/carl-jung-and-tarot/">Mary K. Greer explains</a> , in a 1933 lecture Jung went on at length about his views on the Tarot, noting the late Medieval cards are “really the origin of our pack of cards, in which the red and the black symbolize the opposites, and the division of the four—clubs, spades, diamonds, and hearts—also belongs to the individual symbolism.

They are psychological images, symbols with which one plays, as the unconscious seems to play with its contents.” The cards, said Jung, “combine in certain ways, and the different combinations correspond to the playful development of mankind.” This, too, is how Tarot works—with the added dimension of “symbols, or pictures of symbolical situations.” The images—the hanged man, the tower, the sun—“are sort of archetypal ideas, of a differentiated nature.”

Jung on Predicting the Future with Tarot

Thus far, Jung hasn’t said anything many orthodox Jungian psychologists would find disagreeable, but he goes even further and claims that, indeed, “we can predict the future, when we know how the present moment evolved from the past.” He called for “an intuitive method that has the purpose of understanding the flow of life, possibly even predicting future events, at all events lending itself to the reading of the conditions of the present moment.” He compared this process to the Chinese I Ching, and other such practices. 
As analyst Marie-Louise von Franz recounts in her book <a href="http://amzn.to/2xzV0Ii">Psyche and Matter</a>.

Jung's Use of Divinatory Methods

Jung suggested… having people engage in a divinatory procedure: throwing the I Ching, laying the Tarot cards, consulting the Mexican divination calendar, having a transit horoscope or a geometric reading done.
Content seemed to matter much less than form. Invoking the Swedenborgian doctrine of correspondences, Jung notes in his lecture, “man always felt the need of finding an access through the unconscious to the meaning of an actual condition, because there is a sort of correspondence or a likeness between the prevailing condition and the condition of the collective unconscious.”

Tarot as a Tool for Individuation

What he aimed at through the use of divination was to accelerate the process of “<a href="http://journalpsyche.org/jung-and-his-individuation-process/">individuation</a> ,” the move toward wholeness and integrity, by means of playful combinations of archetypes. As another mystical psychologist, Alejandro Jodorowsky, puts it, “<a href="http://www.openculture.com/2016/10/alexander-jodorowsky-explains-how-tarot-cards-can-give-you-creative-inspiration.html">the Tarot will teach you how to create a soul</a> .” 
Jung perceived the Tarot, notes the blog Faena Aleph, “as an alchemical game,” which in his words, attempts “the union of opposites.” Like the I Ching, it “presents a rhythm of negative and positive, loss and gain, dark and light.”

Jung's Shifting Views on Tarot and the Occult

Much later in 1960, a year before his death, Jung seemed less sanguine about Tarot and the occult, or at least downplayed their mystical, divinatory power for language more suited to the laboratory, right down to the usual complaints about staffing and funding. As he wrote in a letter about his attempts to use these methods:

Under certain conditions it is possible to experiment with archetypes, as my ‘astrological experiment’ has shown. As a matter of fact we had begun such experiments at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, using the historically known intuitive, i.e., synchronistic methods (astrology, geomancy, Tarot cards, and the I Ching). But we had too few co-workers and too little means, so we could not go on and had to stop.

Jungian Approaches to Tarot and the Occult

Later interpreters of Jung doubted that his experiments with divination as an analytical technique would pass peer review. “To do more than ‘preach to the converted,’” wrote the authors of a 1998 article published in the Journal of Parapsychology , “this experiment or any other must be done with sufficient rigor that the larger scientific community would be satisfied with all aspects of the data taking, analysis of the data, and so forth.” Or, one could simply use Jungian methods to read the Tarot, the scientific community be damned.

As in Jung’s many other creative reappropriations of mythical, alchemical, and religious symbolism, his interpretation of the Tarot inspired those with mystical leanings to undertake their own Jungian investigations into parapsychology and the occult. Inspired by <a href="https://marykgreer.com/2008/04/18/carl-jung-on-the-major-arcana/">Jung’s verbal descriptions of the Tarot’s major arcana</a> , artist and mystic Robert Wang has created a <a href="http://amzn.to/2wL9QhD">Jungian Tarot deck</a> , and an accompanying trilogy of books, <a href="http://amzn.to/2x7mDLe">The Jungian Tarot and its Archetypal Imagery</a> , <a href="http://amzn.to/2x7mF5O">Tarot Psychology</a> , and <a href="http://amzn.to/2wLuvlO">Perfect Tarot Divination</a> .

His books purport to be exhaustive studies of Jung’s Tarot theory and practice, written in consultation with Jung scholars in New York and Zurich. Sallie Nichols’ <a href="http://amzn.to/2x7Ryah">Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal Journey</a> is less voluminous and innovative—using the traditional, Pamela Coleman-Smith-illustrated, Rider-Waite deck rather than an updated original version. But for those willing to grant a relationship between systems of symbols and a collective unconscious, her book may provide some penetrating insights, if not a recipe for predicting the future.

Carl Jung on the Power of Tarot Cards: They Provide Doorways to the Unconscious & Perhaps a Way to Predict the Future

I recently recovered from burnout. Reflecting on that time, I realise I’ve been stupid. A few of you might have had similar experiences. I was supervising two teams. I was also responsible for the design of software, including challenging stakeholder management. Then I took on an additional role, as Diversity & Inclusion Officer. On top of that, and with top priority, I was working hard on what I care most about: helping our political, and corporate environment become more design and human-centred.

Mental health is too costly to ignore.

I had all these responsibilities in parallel. Not even because of ambition. I’m not driven by status or promotions.I believe in Human Centred Design and was trying to put this on the map. This is really important to me. I did all the other things because I thought that it was the right thing to do for the organization.I was wrong. Obviously.It was just a matter of time before I’d burn out. I’m a sensitive person. That didn’t help. I suppose that the social effect of Covid didn’t help either.I eventually burned out.

In 2021, I became depressed & started to have occasional suicidal episodes. He prescribed antidepressants. I’m currently on the lowest dose possible, have 0 side effects, & don't rely on social media.

In the 1950s, <a href="https://books.google.com/books/about/Take_Back_Your_Time.html?id=_UmpZOlnvU0C&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button#v=onepage&q&f=false">scholars worried that </a>, thanks to technological innovations, Americans wouldn’t know what to do with all of their leisure time.

Yet today, as sociologist Juliet Schor <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=KjZ54lNDE2EC&dq=overworked+american&hl=en&sa=X&redir_esc=y">notes </a>, Americans are overworked, putting in more hours than at any time since the Depression and more than in any other in Western society. It’s probably not unrelated to the fact that instant and constant access has become de rigueur, and our devices constantly expose us to a barrage of colliding and clamoring messages: “Urgent,” “Breaking News,” “For immediate release,” “Answer needed ASAP.” It disturbs our leisure time, our family time – even our consciousness.

Over the past decade, I’ve tried to understand the social and psychological effects of our growing interactions with new information and communication technologies, a topic I examine in my book “<a href="https://www.routledge.com/The-Terminal-Self-Everyday-Life-in-Hypermodern-Times/Gottschalk/p/book/9781472437082">The Terminal Self: Everyday Life in Hypermodern Times </a>.” In this 24/7, “always on” age, the prospect of doing nothing might sound unrealistic and unreasonable. But it’s never been more important.

In an age of incredible advancements that can enhance our human potential and planetary health, why does daily life seem so overwhelming and anxiety-inducing? Why aren’t things easier? It’s a complex question, but one way to explain this irrational state of affairs is something called the force of acceleration. <a href="https://cup.columbia.edu/book/social-acceleration/9780231148351">According to German critical theorist Hartmut Rosa </a>, accelerated technological developments have driven the acceleration in the pace of change in social institutions.

Acceleration for the Sake of Acceleration

Noticeable acceleration began more than two centuries ago, during the Industrial Revolution. But this acceleration has itself … accelerated. Guided by neither logical objectives nor agreed-upon rationale, propelled by its own momentum, and encountering little resistance, acceleration seems to have begotten more acceleration, for the sake of acceleration. To Rosa, this acceleration <a href="http://www.spiegel.de/international/zeitgeist/hartmut-rosa-essay-acceleration-plagues-modern-society-a-909465.html">eerily mimics </a>the criteria of a totalitarian power: 1) it exerts pressure on the wills and actions of subjects; 2) it is inescapable; 3) it is all-pervasive; and 4) it is hard or almost impossible to criticize and fight.

Unchecked acceleration has consequences.At the environmental level, it extracts resources from nature faster than they can replenish themselves and produces waste faster than it can be processed.At the personal level, it distorts how we experience time and space. It deteriorates how we approach our everyday activities, deforms how we relate to each other and erodes a stable sense of self. It leads to burnout at one end of the continuum and to depression at the other.

The Oppression of Speed

For example, <a href="https://www.bookdepository.com/Gender-Divisions-Working-Time-New-Economy-Diane-Perrons/9781847204974">research finds </a>two to three times more self-reported health problems, from anxiety to sleeping issues, among workers who frequently work in high-speed environments compared with those who do not.When our environment accelerates, we must pedal faster in order to keep up with the pace.

Clearly, acceleration demands more work – and to what end? There are only so many hours in a day, and this additional expenditure of energy reduces individuals’ ability to engage in life’s essential activities: family, leisure, community, citizenship, spiritual yearnings and self-development. It’s a vicious loop: Acceleration imposes more stress on individuals and curtails their ability to manage its effects, thereby worsening it.

In a hypermodern society propelled by the twin engines of acceleration and excess, doing nothing is equated with waste, laziness, lack of ambition, boredom or “down” time. But this betrays a rather instrumental grasp of human existence. <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/1809754">Much research </a>– and many spiritual and philosophical systems – suggest that detaching from daily concerns and spending time in simple reflection and contemplation are essential to health, sanity and personal growth.

Similarly, to equate “doing nothing” with nonproductivity betrays a short-sighted understanding of productivity. In fact, psychological <a href="https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=2432964">research suggests </a>that doing nothing is essential for creativity and innovation, and a person’s seeming inactivity might actually cultivate new insights, inventions or melodies.<a href="https://www.harpercollins.com/9780060750510/in-praise-of-slowness">As legends go </a>, Isaac Newton grasped the law of gravity sitting under an apple tree. Archimedes discovered the law of buoyancy relaxing in his bathtub, while Albert Einstein was well-known for staring for hours into space in his office.

Doing nothing – or just being – is as important to human well-being as doing something. The key is to balance the two.

Since it will probably be difficult to go cold turkey from an accelerated pace of existence to doing nothing, one first step consists in decelerating. One relatively easy way to do so is to simply turn off all the technological devices that connect us to the internet – at least for a while – and assess what happens to us when we do.<a href="https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/cyber.2016.0259">Danish researchers found </a>that students who disconnected from Facebook for just one week reported notable increases in life satisfaction and positive emotions. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/16/technology/16brain.html">In another experiment </a>, neuroscientists who went on a nature trip reported enhanced cognitive performance.

Taking Your Foot Off the Pedal

Different social movements are addressing the problem of acceleration. The Slow Food movement, for example, is a grassroots campaign that advocates a form of deceleration by rejecting fast food and factory farming. As we race along, it seems as though we’re not taking the time to seriously examine the rationale behind our frenetic lives – and mistakenly assume that those who are very busy must be involved in important projects.

The academic sabbatical is centered on the understanding that the mind needs to rest and be allowed to explore in order to germinate new ideas.

American workers’ productivity has increased dramatically since 1973 . What has also increased sharply during that same period is the pay gap between productivity and pay. While productivity between 1973 and 2016 has increased by 73.7 percent, hourly pay has increased by only 12.5 percent. In other words, productivity has increased at about six times the rate of hourly pay.

Workers receive more emails than ever before – a number that’s only expected to grow . The more emails you receive, the more time you need to process them. It requires that you either accomplish this or another task in less time, that you perform several tasks at once, or that you take less time in between reading and responding to emails.

Cognitively, it inhibits sustained focus and critical evaluation. Physiologically, it can stress our bodies and disrupt vital functions.

Touted by the mass media and corporate culture , this credo of busyness contradicts both how most people in our society define “the good life ” and the tenets of many Eastern philosophies that extol the virtue and power of stillness. French philosopher Albert Camus perhaps put it best when he wrote, “Idleness is fatal only to the mediocre.” Simon Gottschalk is Professor of Sociology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

I admit that I’ve never been able to work that way.  There is one thing that always came first and most importantly for me: How am I feeling today? I found that it can easily happen to think of emotions as something that gets in the way of work. When I grew, I often heard that they obstruct reasoning and rationality, but I feel that we as humans can’t shut off our humanness when we come to work.

Feelings provide important feedback during our workday. It doesn’t make sense to pretend that it’s best or even possible to keep our emotions and work separate, treating our capacity for emotion and thought as weakness. I wanted to look into whether there was anything besides a gut feeling to my suspicions behind keeping the head and the heart separate in business.

It turns out, quite a lot. Emotions play a leading role in how to succeed in business because they influence how much you try and this is widely misunderstood by bosses and managers.Psychologists Teresa Amabile and Steven Kramer interviewed over 600 managers and found a shocking result. 95 percent of managers misunderstood what motivates employees. They thought what motivates employees was making money, getting raises and bonuses.

What Does Emotion Have To Do With Our Work

In fact, after analyzing over 12,000 employee diary entries, they discovered that the number one work motivator was emotion, not financial incentive: it’s the feeling of making progress every day toward a meaningful goal. In Fact, Dan Pink found that actually the exact oposite is true:

“The larger the monetary reward, the poorer the performance. – money doesn’t motivate us, at all, instead emotions do.” In the famous expriment by Dr. Edward Deci clarified again whether emotional feedback or money would engagement with work.  People were sitting in a room and tried to solve a puzzle while Deci measured how much time they put in, before giving up.  For Group A, he offered a cash reward for successfully solving the puzzle, and as you might expect, those people spent almost twice as much time trying to solve the puzzle as those people in Group B who weren’t offered a prize.

A surprising thing happened the next day, when Deci told Group A that there wasn’t enough money to pay them this time around: Group A lost interest in the puzzle.  Group B, on the other hand, having never been offered money in exchange for working on the puzzles, worked on the puzzles longer and longer in each consecutive session and maintained a higher level of sustained interest than Group A. So if it not money what else really motivates us?

Pink <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc">explains </a>further that there are in fact just 3 very simple things that drive nearly each and everyone of us to work hard: <ul><li>Autonomy : Our desire to direct our own lives. In short: “You probably want to do something interesting, let me get out of your way!” </li><li>Mastery : Our urge to get better at stuff. </li><li>Purpose : The feeling and intention that we can make a difference in the world. </li> </ul>

If these three things play nicely together, Amabile and Kramer<a href="http://www.progressprinciple.com/">called this </a>the somewhat obvious “inner work life balance” and emphasize its importance to how well we work. Inner work life is what’s going on in your head in response to workday events that affects your performance.

These components: motivation, emotions, and perceptions of how the above three things work together feed each other. So ultimately our emotional processes impact our motivation to work. They end up being the main influencer of our performance. Deci’s experiment showed that payment actually undermined intrinsic motivation because such external rewards thwart our “three psychological needs- to feel autonomous, to feel competent and to feel related to others.” As he told BBC, “You need thinkers, problem solvers, people who can be creative and using money to motivate them will not get you that.”

Amabile and Kramer tell us this: So how does our brain deal with emotion and connect it to such practical results like motivation and productivity? Well, the ironic part is that the parts of the brain that deal with emotions are actually connected to those that deal with cognition . Richard J. Davidson explains how emotional and cognitive functions interrelate. To get all “brainy” with this: Emotions are wired straight into our thinking and cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and reasoning.
