"Better to write for yourself and not have an audience than to write for an audience and not be yourself".
Thus wrote Cyril Connolly (1903 - 1974) English critic and writer. What do you think? In the meantime you think about it I tell you why I try to write every day. What the English critic says is, like all categorical statements, only half true.

We all write to record our thoughts. It is true that we do not always know what thoughts are circulating in our mind. However, it is important to start writing to make them come out. Blessed is he who sits at his desk, with pen or computer, and writes what he already has in his head. The moment we begin to register our thoughts we realize that other thoughts, unexpected and unexpected, arise and ask to be registered. This fact always happens, every moment and every day of the year. And the amazing thing is that everything doesn't always happen the same way.

It is a question of tracing a path to take with writing that leads us to a possible reader. And if there isn't, we communicate with ourselves. The important thing is to open the connection. Writing does just that: it ignites thoughts. The thought can be published and makes this contact more natural and accessible. Writing every day means that every day we learn to think better. It often happens that, before falling asleep, I start thinking about what to write the next day. I may have an idea, a concept, to develop, elaborate, clarify and I build on it a fabric of virtual images and words.

I know well that the next day they will be gone, I will never be able to make them re-emerge as they presented themselves to me at that moment while I was in the darkness of my mind. Yet, I begin to think again and I discover that as if by magic everything re-emerges, even if in a different form. We realize, then, that what matters is the practice, the exercise, the will to cross that barrier of the unconscious beyond which each of us knows that there is what is needed to make sense.

Practice refines the word, accelerates thought, builds meaning, makes it consistent and confident, tries to present it in the best way, first to oneself and then to any reader. It is important that there is someone to whom you can present what you think. You cannot write without confronting this entity that follows you relentlessly like a shadow. Writing every day improves our ability to share after having thought as soon as possible it did not exist, at least so we believe.

It gives us credibility, first towards ourselves and then towards others. Very often we find that others are ourselves. In fact, we find ourselves reflecting on how those who, in various work, study and relationship situations, would think we had the opportunity to confront each other. We then discover that in us there is not a single and unique reality of listening, comparison and criticism, but many realities from which thoughts, ideas, suggestions are born as much as we try to give shape in writing.

For the simple fact that we are not a uniform block of thought, a sacred monolith to which we dedicate what we want to write. If we write every day we discover that we are builders, architects of our always new, always different thought. It is our personal history that is created and recreated, returns and returns, but also appears and disappears, awaited but unpredictable. In short, it is the future that unfolds before our mind and that we materialize with words.

Everything we write can be strictly personal but also dynamically social, belonging to everyone. It depends on how we know how to communicate, which languages we use, which cultures we address, their environments, their traditions, their sensitivity. One thing is certain and that is that every time we write our voice becomes stronger, more courageous, more consistent. We discover that it belongs to us more and more. But at the same time we wrote it, it is no longer ours. It belongs to the world. For this reason we have to write every day.
