While compassion is about understanding people and being willing to see everything through the lens and perspective of the people around you, it also requires some self-examination and reflection - and effort to resist emotional, gut reactions. As Jeff Weiner puts it, you have to try "to be a spectator to your own thoughts, especially when you become emotional. If something triggers you, you have to get out of your own head before you have that knee-jerk anger and say, 'Wait a minute, I wonder what they're experiencing that's making them do that. '
