You can ask this question to anyone who you really don't know that well.
Mixing them causes problems
In one case it will make the other person feel that you really don't know them well which incase you should.
In other case you just made a bad assumption which turns out to be very offensive.
While making any statement or question, pause for few seconds and rethink.
Ask yourself whether the thing you are going to say is relatable to that person and the situation or you just making some bad assumption.
Or you can improvise on it as you can gather ...
