How vision interplays with other senses

The other senses of cats and dogs compensate for their visual limitations.

• Cats can hear the ultrasonic sound that their prey makes, allowing them to find their target even their prey gets out of sight.
• Cats also use smell to identify people. If you've been gone for some time, your cat may not recognise you immediately when you return.
• Dogs also have a good sense of smell. A dog's sense of smell ranges from 1,000 and 10,000 times more effective than people.
