ADAPTABILITY CAN BE FOUND OUTSIDE OF OUR COMFORT ZONE

The 4 levels of Adaptability

The Comfort Zone (Ah...The soft cozy bed of our room...Mum's yummy recipes made with love for you!)

The Learning Zone (Where our ambitions and dreams hang out and party!)

The Panic Zone (Frustration...Panic....Ups and Downs kicks in...aka The Rollercoaster Journey!)

The Magic Zone (Or The Mystical Unknown...Where you unlock your highest potential!)

Gary Gagliardi tells us that to get to the Magic Zone we have to become more adaptable and that act requires great courage, tenacity, and experimentation.

MORE IDEAS FROM THE POWER OF ADAPTABILITY: HOW TO ADAPT TO ANYTHING LIFE THROWS AT YOU. - Justin Thomas Miller

WHAT IS ADAPTABILITY?
  • It’s your willingness to learn, make mistakes, and learn some more.
  • It’s your ability to render adequate feedback and make adjustments or changes in your behaviors that produce positive and productive results.

ACTION PLAN: Ponder about any situation or experience which you've been through and the necessary adjustments you've made to bring positive development in you.

Example:

Experience: I have a sedentary lifestyle

Changes I have made: Adopting a healthier lifestyle like regular exercise (morning sessions of athletic run for an hour) and mindfulness about eating healthy.

An inspiration from "Life of Pi"

The book “Life of Pi,” by Yann Martel is an excellent representation of adaptability. It shows how your circumstances force you to evaluate or reinvent perspectives in life and the choices you’ve made.

Sometimes these evaluations or reinventions are done by choice. Other times they’re forced upon you – asking you to become adaptable.

So are you ready to push yourself out of your comfort zones and master "the Power of Adaptability?" Continue reading the next stash for the Action Plans.

Develop a "growth mindset"

The fixed mindset is when you believe you’re either good/capable or not good/capable of something. That talent alone creates success, regardless of effort.

The growth mindset is when you believe that anyone can be good at anything and that your skills and abilities are because of hard work, practice, and action.

Remember we all are journeying forth in this amazing path of growth! To strive to become the best version of ourselves....Everyday we are evolving...Everyday we are being better and more beautiful than yesterday!

Action plans on achieving growth mindset
  1. Always try to learn something new. Especially something unfamiliar or confusing to you.
  2. Focus on the process of achieving goals and not the outcome like preparing healthy meals every day and working out consistently and not losing 20 pounds in 2 months.
  3. Believe that your passion and purpose come from handwork. Like Mark Cuban says, “Don’t follow you passion, follow your effort.”
  4. Create a list of things you need to improve or get better at.
  5. Accept and learn from constructive criticism.
  6. Get inspired by the achievements of others and their stories of growth.

What Is the Comfort Zone in Psychology?

“The comfort zone is a behavioral state within which a person operates in an anxiety-neutral condition, using a limited set of behaviors to deliver a steady level of performance, usually without a sense of risk.” - Judith Bardwick in her 1991 work Danger in the Comfort Zone

  • Within the comfort zone, there isn’t much incentive for people to reach new heights of performance.
  • It’s here that people go about routines devoid of risk, causing their progress to plateau.

How To Be Adaptable
  • Stop whining. Learn to accept the situation, adapt to it, and move on.
  • Don’t mindlessly believe that something is ‘wrong’ and must be avoided.
  • Discover your coping mechanism and consider changing some aspects of it.
  • Be open to change. As long as it’s safe, embrace new things and experiment.
  • Have multiple plans so no change will surprise you.
  • Engage in positive self-talk occasionally, to help you adapt faster to changes. Stick to your natural inclinations.
  • Do what you feel is right for you.
  • Think big and let go of limitations.
  • Don’t assign blame as a habit, it’s a waste of time.
  • Learn the aspects of your life where you are exaggerating or neglecting to balance it.
  • Stop waiting for self-imposed conditions.

Adaptability in a changing world

In our rapidly changing world, adaptability is a must-have characteristic.

Organizations want team members who can take on new responsibilities and gain new skills as needed. You should not only be able to spot this quality so you can hire the right people, but also build it so that you stay employable.
