The Glycemic Index

A food rating system to assign value to food items based on how quickly they affects your blood sugar level when that food is eaten.

Foods which brake down quickly by your body and cause a rapid increase in blood sugar have a high GI rating. Some examples are (i)sugary food (ii)sugar drinks (iii)white rice.

Low or medium GI foods breaks down more slowly and cause a gradual rise in blood sugar levels. They include veggies and fruits ,whole grains.

It's useful to understand the glycaemic index, for people who are trying to control weight or having diabetes.
