Encouraging cooperation

Creating a collective action is essential when you want to make social or environmental changes, for example, reducing pollution and waste or getting more scientists to share their data with others.

But collective action can come at a personal cost. If you cooperate, you are taking a chance as others might not put in an effort and instead opt to free-load while still benefitting from the potential cooperative actions of others. To deal with such problems, cooperation and communication are key.
